According to a new report, chimps at a sanctuary were seen to show signs of extreme grief and comforting each other when one of their number died.

A chimp named Dorothy died of a heart attack whilst at a Cameroon sanctuary, and her fellow chimps fell silent as her body was taken away, living up against the fence and comforting each other.

Evolutionary biologists have suggested that this hints at possible animal explanations for human funerary rituals, as well as supporting the evidence that Neanderthal man also buried their dead.

No, he called chimps ugly. Just because we evolved from them doesn't mean we look like them.

No, I don't see how. Humans are not physically identical to chimps. It's like saying all lizards should be 4 metres tall because they evolved from dinosaurs.

Chimps have emotions... And? Ask anyone that has a dog if they think animals can feel emotional pain or loss. I realize what point you're trying to make and, you failed.

This is the first real clue we've got though towards understanding WHY humans hold funeral ceremonies and grieve.

Particularly as it has now been observed in chimps, providing evolutionary biologists some impetus to the idea of funerary rites and grieving behavior as being passed on through the evolutionary chain.

Recognition of death has nothing to do with funeral rites. Early funeral rites were probably done for pseudo-religious reasons, which were caused by an increase in human beings' brain capacity, enabling and causing them to think more about the world they were in and how they got there, and what happened when they left it.

Due to the "Humans aren't so special" comment, I doubt that's what you were actually trying to achieve.

No. We and chimps evolved from a common ancestor. And all humans evolved from a common ancestor obviously. So by this logic, "Brian Peppers is ugly" means "Jessica Alba is ugly".

You're wrong and that post is a bit shit, is more or less what I'm trying to say.

Imagine how chimps feel about humans after this incident happened. Humans disgust me... http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/26/aa-gill-shot-baboon

Apparently some scumbag decided to kill a baboon "to see what it would feel like to kill another human."

Yes, and he clearly represents every one of us humans entirely...
