I've seen the short films of David Lynch and I must say I love his style

His short films tend to be more experimental than his feature-length ones. Even Eraserhead, which is definitely his weirdest one.

Speaking of Lynch, I need to watch Mulholland Drive.

Fujifilm, I choose you!

On topic, I watched M.A.S.H. the other day. Gonna rewatch it sometime soon.

EDIT: On Lynch, seen Mulholland Drive, his shorts, Dumbland series, Elephant Man, The Straight Story, INLAND EMPIRE. I think that's it.

Mainly because in that thread, we just talked about our favorite films and recommended them to people. I'm hoping this thread at least attempts intelligent discussions about film.
I was always surprising that the old thread failed to do that.

Quote by RhAndroid
I know you weren't having a go, its just the general consensus in that thread is "state a movie that you have liked".

This is about movies in general. good/bad/gossip/directors/soundtracks.
I watched three awesome films in a row the other night:

Children of Men
The Wrestler
Man on the Moon

Tarantino is a genius.

Jackie Brown has always been overshadowed by Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs, but that movie is fantastic. I've not yet seen Inglorious Basterds, but that looks pretty good.

Pulp Fiction is quite possibly my favourite film though.

My sister watched it for the first the time other day - and I hadn't watched it in over a year - and when Marsellus' character said

"What now? Let me tell you what now. I'm gonna call a couple of hard, pipe-hitting ******s to go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', hillbilly boy?! I ain't through with you! Not by a damn sight. I'm gonna get medieval on yo' ass!"

we both burst out laughing. It really is one of the funniest films of all time.

I can't say the same for Hostel. I watched 20 minutes of it and thought it was a load of pretentious nonsense. I get the impression Tarrantino feels so highly of himself and his film-making abilities, that he can develop anything and call it satiral humour, shunning the non-believers and naysayers trying to put him back in his place.

Tarantino only produced Hostel. He wasn't involved in the writing or directing.

I'm aware of Jesus Christ, Superstar. This is different.

EDIT: Inglorious basterds had 3 flaws in my eyes.

1: It promised that which it did not deliver. I expected a movie with a ridiculous amount of badass nazi killing and it just didn't give me that.
2: It chose to focus on a stupid character(s) I didn't care about while sidelining awesome characters, which returns directly to number 1, promising that which it does not deliver.
3: The violence was almost all used up in the trailer. The scenes from the trailer are literally 90% of the movie's violent content. There were 10 or so 3 second scenes of violence. Also, the movie's production wasn't uniform. Some people got a cheesy introduction with their name plastered on the screen while others didn't. But I actually know how to edit film, so that's just a pet peeve.

Oh, yeah, you're right. It's Eli Roth who wrote/directed it. Producers plays a large role, however, in the outcome.

I quite liked Roth's Cabin Fever.

What did you think of Death Proof?

So movie thread, on halloween I am staying up all night watching horror movies. Reccomend me the scariest/goriest films you can think of. Please no cannibal Holocaust. That movie is just *shudder*.
So far I have thought of:
The Exorcist
Day of the Dead
30 days of Night

I'm in my high school's film class, it's amazing, I might look to it as a career.

Tarintino and Stone ftw.

If your school offers a vocational program for video production or anything like that, I urge you to take it.

I though a class I took on video during my sophomore year was awesome until I took a two year course at my county's career center.

...To keep on topic, yes they're both amazing. Major props towards Natural Born Killers.

edit: can someone recommend me any recent good action films? All I've seen is the weak-ass pseudo pg-13 kung-fu of Jason Statham (sp?) and no, The Expendables looks absolutely horrible.

Casino Royale or any of the Bourne films if you haven't already.

Sin City?

Reservoir Dogs is on tonight. I haven't seen it, but seeing as I loved both Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds, I have high hopes for it.

Edit: Just finished watching it. It was great.
I've come to realize that with Tarantino movies, I sit through the first part of the movie thinking, "Ehh... it's okay, I guess," but by the end of it, I love it for some reason.

You can't be serious?
Fantastic acting + ridiculously over-the-top plotline + incredible action sequences + beautiful soundtrack by the genius Clint Mansell + immense amounts of dark humour = unbelievably entertaining film.

At the end of the day, if a film entertains you, it's good. That's what it's there to do. How it reached that orientation, or whether it's sociably acceptable to other people, is hearsay.

To me, it felt like a Guy Richie film, or a Luc Besson film; full of energy and humbling honesty.

Plus, I'm quite partial to Joe's other piece, Narc, which was similarly hectic and OTT.

I love Sin City, but found Casino Royale to be awfully boring and the Bourne camera work to be too terrible to actually know what's going on in fights. I'm looking for Shoot Em Up type stuff.

Smokin' Aces is one of my personal favourite films.

I don't understand all the shit this movie catches. Personally, I thought it was awesome. Tons of people think it's complete crap though.

And to the guy looking for gore/horror movies, look up ToeTag Pictures. Start with the August Underground series then check out their others.

Has anyone here been to an actual film school (as in, studied film and nothing else for a year or so)? I've been toying with the opportunity, I'll probably be going to some sort of university after the summer.

Oh yeah, I saw Blue Velvet again last night. Brilliant film. Absolutely brilliant.

It sounds like it'd be cool as hell. While I'm not going to ever go to one, probably, I'm thinking of taking a class where you learn the basics of working those kinds of cameras next semester.
