There's actually a lot of knowledge in the pit. I mean sure, this place has a general reputation for being retarted; but you can learn a lot from the right threads; ex: Philosophy, Fitness, Literature random educational discussion threads that pop up.

I don't completely hate 4chan. It gets a terrible reputation due to /b/, which I do hate, though. There are some legit boards on 4chan, though. (and, no I'm not talking about the porn boards).
