So Pit, what do you think the last original genre, too come out of western music, has been? I'm gonna say dubstep, which was invented in the UK a few years ago.

For those who don't know what dubstep is:

EDIT: Also, if its a real genre, please post examples.

i wouldn't consider dubstep an original genre, it's more of a descendant of dnb

but if we're counting genres created from other genres, then it's probably some retarded gay -core shit.

I try to listen to anything new, and I can't say I've come across a 'new genre' lately.

I love that genre, it's so straightforward.
"You have brains in your head,
You have feet in your shoes,
You can steer yourself,
any direction you choose,
You're on your own,
And you know what you know,
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go."

all music is a descendant of something. I meant original in that it is distinctive enough not too just be a subgenre.

Are there any genres not derived from something else?

I personally think they sound pretty different. Different tempos, different rythm, dubstep has much greater use of wobble bass, etc.. They just cross-over in certain ways and share a similar fanbase, but are IMO sonically quite different.

If you compare:

I would have to say metal.
No, not all forms of it. Just metal. No sub genres.
Try to find that. I'll give you a cookie.
PS: Heavy metal doesn't count.

there has been plenty original genres in the last 30 years, drum n bass, hip hop, electronica,

Saying it a lot won't make it happen Kensai.

It's hard to say because the western scale has been around for ages and I think we've pretty much done all we can with it when it comes to creating whole new genres.

And also, pretty much everything modern came from Blues. Started in the African slave times, then that modernized a bit, jazz started around it, blues turned into rock and roll, rock and roll turned into modern rock, pop, metal, and a bunch of other stuff. Of course this is just a brief and not completely accurate timeline of the genres.

thats basically what people call "heavy metal", or "classic metal", or "NWOBHM". It's only cause a lot of metalheads are pedants who have to sort things into neat little boxes that nothing is called just metal.

you blew my mind.

I'd say crabcore

but seriously, i dunno. This whole new breed of poppunk that emerged in the late 90s i suppose, but thats not really original or that new. it's getting pretty big though
