Hello, pit. I'm doing a music project for my media studies class in which we have to choose a song, play it to the class and explain what it means to us personally. I've picked some Hendrix, and I was wondering if this song has any particular meaning to you as well as me.

Firstly and most notably is the way I can relate to the first verse. My parents are now in the final stages of divorce, having painfully decided to split a few years ago.

The second verse deals with the Indian chief that is killed when ambushed the night before his first battle, which he had been anticipating since he was a little boy. This can metaphorically entail many things, but what is most prominent to me is seeing friends of mine who had a gift and were bound to do great things fall short to drug addiction and suicide and the like. So young, so many dreams to achieve, so terribly tragic.

The final verse, which describes the crippled girl who "couldn't speak a sound", describes to me an inspirational tale of rebirth. Hendrix describes her as having a "heart [that] was a frown" which I think is a beautiful line, and the beauty of the sunset gives her the inspiration to drop from the waterside cliff and let the sea take her, a romantic idea if you believe in reincarnation which I believe was the intent behind the concept.

Anyway, if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them(note: I'm not taking the easy way out in completing this lol, I have almost enough material for two explanations, I am just looking for some outside opinion.

Thanks for readin'.
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.
He to whom this emotion is a stranger,
who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."

Down the street you can hear her scream you're a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbors start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually

A little Indian brave who before he was ten,
Played war games in the woods with his Indian friends
And he built up a dream that when he grew up
He would be a fearless warrior Indian Cheif
Many moons past and more the dream grew strong until
Tomorrow he would sing his first war song and fight his first battle
But something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually

There was a young girl, who's heart was a frown
Cause she was crippled for life,
And she couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living,
So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled you wont hurt me no more
But then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say
Look a golden winged ship is passing my way

And it really didn't have to stop, it just kept on going...

And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.
He to whom this emotion is a stranger,
who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."

That everything meets its end eventually, everything is really castles made of sand and the sea is life, which will come and destroy the castle, no matter how hard you try to build it up and avoid the sea, its inevitable.

That was something along the lines of what Hendrix's intentions were, except his were more personal. Sand was a favoured metaphor of Jimi's for the temporary nature of existence, of time slipping away, how nothing can be taken for granted -love, loyalty, family bonds, friendship. Jimi's whole childhood had been spent in a state of uncertainty and transition- different homes, differnt schools, different cares and a mother who was here one minute and gone the next. The irony is acute: not solid castle built on sand which might shift, yet still remain intact, but a castle made of sand and so therefore fatally flawed from the moment of creation. Utopia is a mere illusion as the castles in Spain crumbled away.

But I was looking for something less generalized and more personal. Read the lyrics. What do they mean to YOU, based from your personal beliefs and experiences?

It means nothing to me. Row, Row, Row your boat on the otherhand, that's a very different story.
If it were socially acceptable, I would drape myself in velvet.
