(poll coming)

So Marlon King the premiership football (aka Soccer) player beat up some chick and is going to jail for it, as well as being sacked from his football club. Many are saying he should be banned from the game as he brings the game into disrepute, is a bad influence on kids etc.

Michael Vick the American Football QB, was jailed for arranging dogfights, and since has to participate in documentaries about dog welfare. What do you feel is an appropriate punishment for sports people who do crimes uninvolved with their job?

QB dog killer should never have been allowed back in the league. And the Eagles fans have zero class for giving a psychopathic dog killer a standing ovation.
#3
well here in america an athlete can commit manslaughter and still play. i guess you have to kill more than 1 person to get banned from the sport, except pete rose he just got ****ed by the MLB

They're usually a private organization, so I would assume they are allowed to do what they want to the status of their members, especially if it is written in their "constitutions" that they can do such measures against criminals.

Yeah, but he was bound to be mentioned anyway.

With Tyson though, as much as I love him, he was mentally unstable as ****.

Also, Antonio Margarito should be banned from putting on the gloves ever again after he tried to load his gloves with plaster. And he STILL got knocked out.

who?

if you mean NFL NBA FIFA etc, obviously this thread is questioning whether their rules should be changed.

I don't have anything against King being kicked out of his team (Wigan?), because sportsmen, especially footballers, are seen as role models to young children; and since they live such public lives, it's not good for them to be beating girls up in clubs, especially not after he tried to pull her, and she declined, apparently saying "do you know how rich I am?" as he hit her.

Not that there should be a law demanding it, it's at the club's discretion, but I'm not against their decision.

It should be entirely down to the employers - i.e. the clubs, such as Wigan in this case - as it would be for any 'normal' person who is convicted of a crime.

On a related note, Marlon King will soon become Marlon Queen...

fail. i had hardly heard of him before.

well his name is king i suppost.

Since they're role models they are showing kids what they can do if they work hard but also what will happen if they do wrong. Also, if I got a criminal record from something I did during the weekend I wouldn't be able to work where I do anymore

No. Because a) what if it was Ronaldo and the club had paid £60 mil for him then he gets jailed for months for dogfighting or assault? No way would they cancel his contract and lose that amount of cash, and b) there would be no unilateral agreement, thats why the FA are there.

(im referring to being banned from the game not banned from a club)

I don't see why people who commit crimes should be banned from sports.

It's their private life, it should not be mixed with their sports career, just stupid IMO.

No, I mean the actual teams/clubs. Of course there is the leagues above them too. The thread isn't "obviously" about the leagues because the first example was a man being kicked out of his club, not the entire sport forever (at least, that is how it reads without knowing context).

When it comes to should any body (the team, the league, whatever) be able to punish criminals, I think they should; they have the right to, as I said. Do I think they should? No, I don't. I don't care if there are criminals playing football (or acting, or playing music). I base no standards on those people as people, only as professions.

Well you see, Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case?

I guess you can say that must have been a crushing blow for Marlon.

If the club wishes to discipline them, they can. Since sports persons are considered to be role-models, I have little sympathy for an asshat who gets himself fired for committing a crime.

FOR JUST £2 A WEEK, YOU CAN PREVENT THIS.

I can understand how sports stars get away with shit the way movie stars do, but it does seem unfair.

If someone commits a crime, they normally lose their job. The same side of the argument is that the league has the right to set an example of what conduct is allowed by its players. If someone breaks those rules, they should lose their job/be banned from the league. Just makes sense to me...
#26
nah i dont think so. thats what the legal system is for. tbh if any normal person got put in jail, they wouldnt be banned from ever working in a career again would they? they would serve their time and then move on from their

look at mutu he managed to get past the crimes he commited and still plays for a club in europe i believe. gerrard got tried in court for assault. and he still plays for liverpool. theres been many footballers who have kept playing after allegations etc etc.
actors manage it and even dwayne chambers still keeps doing his running career so i dont see why marlon king should be any different

not to be picky but madrid paid 80 million(or somewhere past that) for ronaldo. and that is a hell of a lot more then 60. if a team had paid that much, there would be no way he could let go of that contract without having to pay any back

good point made though. due to marlon king not being as high profile and high paid as ronaldo wigan could afford to let him go.
