So I just signed up for lessons with Marshall Harrison (Youtube Page ), and I was wondering if anyone had any questions they'd like me to ask him while I'm getting schooled. People seem to have a lot of questions about his legato technique so that should be near the top of my list.

I'd like to ask him why he feels the need to constantly put down other guitarists and claim that he's better than them.

^^ I agree, he has amazing technique and can play amazingly fast yet his slower playing sucks.

I've only ever heard him criticize two guitarists, and he's no worse in that aspect than half the people on this forum. The difference with him is that he actually has the skill to back it up, and I don't mean just wanking a scale sequence over and over again or spazzing out on the low E string and calling it "technical". The pieces of music that this guy can play are some of the most musically complex across any instrument out there let alone guitar.

Yet when it comes to 'jamming' his improvisational skills, vibrato and melodic control absolutely suck. He is a ignorant idiot who believes playing fast / having perfect technique makes him better than others.

^ they should, you're taking lessons from him. When he had his site up the lesson vids for download were actually pretty good, even if his youtube lessons are nearly contentless. I'd be pretty hopeful that you'll get a lot out of this experience.

Dude, he f*cking blows. He'll like say a few sentences of sometimes useful information, then pointlessly shred for several minutes.

You wouldn't happen to know where I could track down those old videos, do you? I've heard several people mention an old website he used to have, but it's not up anymore.

Also, I did the lesson. He explained everything perfectly clear, and was really informative. I really don't get why everyone has a hard time understanding his youtube videos. Unfortunately, the intonation was almost completely off on my guitar during the lesson (I needed to change the strings, but didn't have any spare packs), but he actually had some good things to say about my technique and theory knowledge. I'm amazed at how quickly the man can pick up a lick and completely master it. I talked to him about a few hybrid picking licks I had developed (some crazy string skipping ones), and it took him all of about 30 seconds to completely master them.

So what's wrong with giving people helpful information and then showing them examples of what can be done with the licks he's showing?

http://www.marshallharrison.com/ - been down for ages. I think he just left for youtube. I hopefully have a few of those vids hoarded somewhere but I don't know if I could be arsed uploading them - nothing important in them tbh, and the shredporn on youtube is better.

Because he doesn't really explain things in a manner that allows people to follow his reasoning or methods. He generally presents his ideas and then plays. That's fine for me but it's not much use if you're not already a decently advanced player.

He's an good guitarist but not imho a good teacher - different skills completely. If he can teach (which I think he probably can when he can be bothered) he doesn't do it on his YT lessons. I'm glad to hear you had a different experience with your private lesson.

But's I needz meh shredz p0rnz lol. If you could upload a few of his old vids I'd be incredibly grateful even if they're not as good as his youtube stuff. If you're too busy, it's no big deal though.

Yeah i've noticed that on watching his videos

His technique is amazing very fast very accurate but it seems like the core elements lack. For example a good confident vibrato, strong bends and dynamic phrasing don't seem to be that apparent here.

Shredporn? Did you coin that phrase? It's awesome.

I don't think his style of vibrato is more a stylistic choice more than a lack in ability. His vibrato is much more subtle. I think it's also kind of hard to judge his bends since he just doesn't seem to do that many. Holdsworth is kind of the same way though. I'm not sure what you mean by dynamic phrasing.

You have to say it "SHR3DZ P0RNZ". That's the proper form of the phrase.

I know this is a few years old and probably nobody but me is out here hunting for this stuff.. but I have to say, as someone involved with technical guitar playing and musicality for a long time.. It never ceases to amaze me how vitriolic guitar players are.. more than any other instrument. What is it about this instrument that makes such zealots out of its handlers?
Marshall's playing is staggering.. splitting hairs about his ability at lesser or greater degrees is like arguing over whether a sunset is prettier at 7 or 7:30.. there is absolutely no point in it.
I'm sure if anyone does read this they'll tell me with equal ferocity to go shite in my hat.. but all the nagging that guitar players do, would seem better suited for the pugilist's and NASCAR fans.

I think the point is that a lot of people don't think Marshall's a sunset to begin with, it's not splitting hairs to them.

And guitar isn't anywhere near as bad as MMA forums for bitching and hairsplitting.
