I have searched for hours but i could find anything that would help me, now I ask you. I have windows vista on my computer and i decided to install Ubuntu. I can boot to Ubuntu from the grub but when i try to boot to vista it just restarts my computer and returns to the grub. On several sites on the web it says to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst (or something close to that) file, but i dont have that file.

I asked on the Ubuntu site and got no help at all.

did you install it as dual boot or just over vista? also, if you kept the windows partition, there should automatically be a boot selection when you start up, otherwise try editing the file you stated above to include that partition.

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.

try reinstalling grub, or alternatively try installing and using LILO instead.

if both fail, do you have your Vista cd/dvd?

find an example of the what the file would look like then create it yourself, otherwise try reinstalling grub. if that doesnt work, try lilo.

and unless you plan on gaming, imo, theres no reason for a dual boot. you can get anything on a windows machine for linux for free, and they work just as well. for things that NEED windows, theres always programs like Wine and other virtual machine emulators.

If messing around with grub/lilo doesn't fix your problems, generally reinstating the Vista bootloader will fix your problem. I've had to do it a couple of times. Go straight to Step Three
