Yes, I realise there's a dead Dark Ambient thread which exists in the 'Other' Forum but really now, that place is a lost cause.

I absolutely adore Dark Ambient's heavy, chilling and dark atmosphere and in most cases, I find it to be more metal than metal

Discuss your favourite artist whether it be Ulver or the entire Cold Meat Industry.

i've never actually heard any dark ambient before. any bands you reckon would be best to start off with

The entire Cold Meat Industry

Lustmord
Coil
Lull

I'm listening to Atrium Carceri atm. Great stuff to immerse yourself in

Lustmord is the first Dark Ambient I got into, so you should give it a shot.

Not related to the TS, but I swear every time I hear "dark ambient", I think about "1969" by Boards of Canada, since it's an ambient electronic piece, and it's pretty dark in tone, overall.

Cianyx, this Lustmord piece is giving me chills. I'm going to look further, it's brilliant.

I love how the Metal forum has so many threads about non Metal topics, although, this sort of stuff is quite at home here.

Not really, more folky/pagan/ambient stuff.

My favorites are the previously mentioned Aakon and Moevot, but my personal favorite is Akira Yamaoka.

Brilliant man.

Aghast and Atrium Carceri write some terrifying stuff.

Pretty much all of my favourite artists have been mentioned, but a worthwhile mention here would be Kammarheit. There are a few others that I've been listening to recently that escape me at the moment.

For fans of Nox Arcana, also try Midnight Syndicate

And Virtuoso, there was no mention of P D'H, because I haven't seen this thread earlier

one of my favourite artists easily, whether for their black metal or ambient

I like this song by Abruptum. I do not know why I like it actually. It hardly has any musical elements, and by all means it is just noise with some random opera singing in the background. I suppose what is hard about true ambient music is that it ultimately serves no purpose and is background music, but it is something you experience like walking through the woods. You hear sounds then they are put out of your mind. That is essentially what this stuff is.

Is Naervaer dark ambient?
I remember hearing one of their songs on one of the radio mixes... And I loved it.

On the topic of CMI, Sophia, Raison D'Etre, and Puissance are brilliant and deserve a mention. Personally, I also think that Mortiis's first few releases are top-notch (stay away from his later electro-pop goth albums), though they're somewhat controversial amongst most metal fans.

A lesser-known CMI favorite of mine is Heid's "Pilgrims of the Sublunary World"...Take a stroll in the wee hours of the morning while listening to that album sometime, I promise you lucid visions of the apocalypse like you've never imagined.

I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

Lustmord's probably my favorite dark ambient musician, but I also enjoy Robert Rich, Coil, Aphex Twin's first record, and Forest Silence's ambient moments.

I like Paysage D'Hiver a bit more as far as their DA/black metal material is concerned, but I suppose that's more of a question of personal preference

I like them both equally, really. I was just sayin' that Darkspace is awesome and hasn't been mentioned here yet.

Though I'd almost say Darkspace more...
