So I have a book report due tomorrow and I chose to find a song that has the same theme of 1984 by George Orwell. I have to give a short description explaining why they share a theme, I have to print 35 copies of lyrics for the class, and I get to play the song for the class. Any ideas?

But I'm looking for a death metal song so that class can be brutal :<

Death metal? Just play any death metal song and write your own lyrics to pass out. It's not like you can understand what they're saying.

I was going to post that...

On an unrelated note, according to Wikipedia's article on the book, there aren't any metal songs based on it, but quite a few rock/alt. rock songs.

MushroomEDIT: Although to be honest, if you want something more directly from 1984, go for Resistance, rather than United States of Eurasia

MushroomEDIT2: Wikipedia is apparently wrong. However, I still think you should go with Muse. Not only for political reasons, but for moral ones as well.

1984 is about more than just being watched...

Yeah. It's about being watched AND recorded.

but it's the first thing that comes to mind
censorship and surveillance are a lot more common in metal as themes than sexual repression and nationalism

Dark Tranquillity - Senses Tied

I haven't read 1984 in a long time but i remember there being plenty of stuff about the use of language and stuff.

"Sure we've had a good run with vowels, nouns, and letters
but within its very nature the ability to distort"

also "Senses gone I cheer"
certainly ties in with the way people join in nationalistic cheers

It actually has that "If you want a picture of the future..." quote at the beginning.

Not brutal death...blackened grind. But it's definitely brutal.

Just write the most br00t4l deathcore riffs and offensive (but inaudible) lyrics yourself and pretend someone else did.

These two music videos seem to have a 1984 theme.

Not metal but it's probably your best bet. 2+2=5 was written about the torture scene near the end of the book, hence the title.

You keep seeing songs like KoC, SMBH, and Hysteria showing up on games, but I want Micro Cuts on either Rock Band or Sing Star. I want to see numerous masses of kids staring at the tv wondering what the hell they're supposed to do.

I'm thinking Panic Attack by Dream Theater. For me, the book was more about the psychological tension and the way it ****s with your head, than the government control.
