so, my friend plays a mixture of classic rock (think Hendrix, Beatles, Stones etc) and Metal/Hard Rock (Metallica, S.O.A.D, EVH) and blues. He wants an 'all in one' tube amp which will get him all that w/ an LP knockoff. Someone at GC recommended he tried a Mesa Boogie Rect-O-Verb (they didn't have one in stock at the time). Now, I know that not ALL GC employees are idiots, but a recto for classic rock?
I've never played thru one myself (being in the UK makes it hard to find them) but `I always thought they were more like a metalheads wet dream - or not?

it should be able to do it, i would say you've got confused with the recto heads which are mainly metalhead amps

Rectos are pretty big for things like shred and pop punk too... Just saying.

It will certainly do it. I know a guy who uses a Rectoverb in his country/classic rock band and it sounds fantastic.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.
