So i was out with my friends last night, one of them being the old frontman in the band i was in. Hes a talented accoustic singer/song writer these days but anyway. So we were discussing how much the drummer in my old band sucked balls at drumming when he said " I dont consider the drums to be a musical instrument, they're just percussion"

Now im primarily a guitarist, I dabble a bit in the drums and love a drummer joke as much as the next guy. But to say the drums arent a musical instrument seems to me to be just plain retarded. So im wondering what all you folk think? Just because the drums provide no real melodic function does it make them sub-musical instruments?

TL: DR - friend thinks drums arent musical instrument. whats your opinion?

I think Neil Pert begs to differ.
I've gotten a lot of LOLs in my time but I choose not to sig them to not look like a pretentious douchebag

Tell that to a jazz drummer.

I think we've already reached the end of this debate here. Really, your friend is an idiot.

Your friend is an idiot.

While drums may not play notes, they create a rhythm. Rhythm is a primary element of music. A lot of traditional music in India and West Africa is played entirely on drums.

Also, "percussion" not being an instrument is ludicrous. A lot of percussion instruments play tuned notes just like any other class of musical instruments, if that's how he would define whether something is a musical instrument or not.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but Carl Palmer >>> Neil Peart.

There are lots of instruments that can do things besides being percussive, but being a one trick pony in that sense doesn't diminish the fact that it's still one.

Only 1 person has voted no.

Of course they are.
As said above, Piano is also a percussion instrument (although it could also technically be stringed :shrug so hey.
Drums play an important part in music just like all other instruments.

Piano, Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Drums, Steel Drums, Triangle.

All are Percussion Instruments.
The lives of thousands in my hands
I’ve come to take back what’s rightfully mine and now you’re damned
The lights grow dark in their homes
But our road is lit by fire from the sky
So we push forward

I think it's better to debate if a triangle is an instrument....

Of course drums are a musical instrument. Music is divided into rhythm and melody, drums are a rhythm instrument, so they are 'musical'... they just aren't normaly considered as melodical, although I've seen guys tune their skins up to 'notes' and play simple tunes on them.

Blimy, , two more have voted for them not being musical instruments.

Gentlemen, I suggest a witch hunt, followed by torture and a public execution.

people who vote no are probably being "That Guy" :P

on topic: yes.

Percussion instruments are instruments. Hence they're called percussion instruments. I thought that would have been obvious to everyone. Though I suppose 48/52 isn't bad.

Drums are often the driving force behind a band. Think about it.

That doesn't even need to come into this.

Here's how to tell if something is a musical instrument.

Can you make music with it?

Yes - It's a musical instrument.
No - Either it isn't a musical instrument, or you're just doing it wrong.

Just to play devil's advocate, but Zappa's law clearly indicates that anything can be a musical instrument, even a bike.

That's the best instrument! How dare you doubt it!

If they weren't an instrument, you wouldn't have to tune them.

True.

It's like asking, 'What is art?'
Anything that intended as art is art, so in a similar way, anything that is played as an instrument is an instrument.
