A friend of mine was playing some Weather Report, which I found a little bit like Tortoise's TNT, which i like very much. I was wondering what other jazz there is that's as sophisticated and quiet as this. Any recs?
I'm not sure...maybe Pan America?
It's not jazz per se, but Talk Talk's albums Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden might be what you're looking for. Try Miles Davis' In A Silent Way (my avatar), Return to Forever's first two albums (s/t and Light As A Feather) though the vocals might not be what you're looking for, Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay, and Jon Hasell's Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street. And also, for another non-jazz reccomendation, try Can's Future Days. Also, try exploring Chicago's jazz/post-rock scene, which is where Tortoise came out of. Some bands in the scene are Chicago Underground Trio, Algernon, Isotope 217, and Brokeback. Hopefully this post helps.
