i just preordered the peavey 6505 112 combo. i like to play stuff like chiodos, the devil wears prada, the human abstract, as well as ska or red hot chili peppers.

What guitar do you guys think would be good for a sound like those bands? My budget is probably 400 dollars; i have not been able to look into guitars yet.

IMO, save up to like 500 and pick up a low end PRS. Musician's Friend has two models marked down atm.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

Schecter Hellraiser Tempest for $400.

There's a Devil Wears Prada cover of some Ozone song (don't listen to them, just remember seeing it) on Youtube and the kid is playing a Hellraiser Tempest coincidentally enough.
