I have a couple friends who go to Berklee, and when I hang out with them all they play is major 7ths. It gets old. I picked up one of their guitars the other day hoping to idly strum some chords and it was tuned to open Dmaj7.

Are you nuts? I've hardly ever seen E major used in songs. The only bands I've heard that use it extensively are Between the Buried and Me and Protest the Hero (Protest modulates quite a bit though so no surprise there). And you hardly ever hear it in classical pieces, and nil in band music (aparrently E major is a hard key for most bands instrument to play in).

I would defnitely agree with you on E minor though. Also I see A minor quite a bit too.
