In one of my classes we're starting a unit on mental illness, and i have to do a survey on what people think of mental illness, so if you guys could put up with a little of my foolishness for a bit, i'd be eternally greatful. I've just got 5 questions, a simple yes or no would be awesome.
1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness?
4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?

Thanks everyone!

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill? Depends, typically no
2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees? Sure. Every thing can occur in varying degrees.
3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness? Depends on the disease. Some things people have to get over it on there own. I think the term "mental illness" is thrown around to loosely.
4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness? Allegedly
5. Can mental illness be effectively treated? No. Drugs don't help, they just cover who the person really is.

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
It all depends. I have no problem with mental illness or those who have them- it's the unpredictability of behavior that one ought to be afraid of.

2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
Yes.

3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness?
Not professionally- however, having bipolar disorder myself, I would at least be able to identify and comfort the friend in question.

4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
Obviously.

5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?
Many cases can.
Many cases cannot.

That's called treatment you fool. It doesn't have to cover them up, in most cases it doesn't. Not to mention it's not the only form of treatment.

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
Depends on what sort of mental illness, but yes there are some situations where I'm sure I would feel threatened(I haven't yet)

Of course

I would certainly try.

4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
Yes

5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?
Yes, but not with a lot of repercussions.
#12
1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
Slightly. Depends upon what they have.
2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
Yes

Yes/Depends.
4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
Yes.
5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?

#15
1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
not unless they give me reason to be (threatening me, talking about things that could be dangerous)

2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
yes

3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness?
depends on the illness

4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
yes

5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?
depends on the illness. id say that most can be treated, but most wont be because every person has a different mind. physical disabilities are easy to identify/diagnose/treat because most of them can be seen and are commonly dealt with. mental problems are personal to whoever has them, and thus are harder to deal with.

2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees? Yes. Everyone suffers from some form of Mental Illness, to a lesser or greater extent.
3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness? No, not that well or permanently. There are drugs that help them, and Psychologic treatment can often help too.
4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness? A severe case, yes, but not that well. An ex-wife of one of my father's best friends.
5. Can mental illness be effectively treated? Today, yes, but still not well enough.

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
depends on the person and the circumstances, my schizophrenic uncle has tried to kill my mother before and i would not feel safe around him. my obsessive-compulsive sister is one of the least terrifying people i know

2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
yes (somewhat related to the above description of my personal experiences)

usually depending on the illness and if the person is willing to be treated

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill? No more so than 'sane' people who are being threatening. It's not the illness I feel threatened by, it's threatening behaviour, which can be displayed by anyone, regardless of mental wellbeing.

2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees? Yes, very clearly. This is a ridiculous question. Would you ask the same about physical illness? e.g. pneumonia and infected lungs vs. the common cold

3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness? I'd like to think that I have done, but obviously the support of untrained friends isn't enough on its own.

4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness? Yes. Me, and most people I get on well with have to some (detectable) degree or other.

5. Can mental illness be effectively treated? Yes. Sometimes the treatment may involve being on drugs for the rest of your life, but that's the same for physical illnesses like diabetes. Obviously it depends on the case, but to at least the same extent as physical illness.

NB. I think that by focussing on 'mental illness' as something that other people have and as something totally distinct from physical illness as though it's a completely separate entity shows the amount of misinformation which surrounds the subject.

For example, alter question 1 to read 'Do you feel threatened by amputees?' or 'Do you feel threatened by people with cancer?'. It doesn't look like quite such an appropriate question now, right?

1. Do you feel threatened around someone who's mentally ill?
I'm not threatened by mental illness itself, no, but obviously I'd be a bit threatened if I met a violent psychotic who was going around being psychotic and violent.
2. (as far as you know) can mental illness occour in varying degrees?
Yes, and anyone who thinks it can't is a bit silly
3. Do you believe you would be able to help a friend with a mental illness?
I'd be able to nag them to get help, if that counts.
4. Do you know anyone who has any mental illness?
No, but both my heroes have bipolar.
5. Can mental illness be effectively treated?
Depends on the illness.
