I get really confused when I see the same notes stacked on each other like this:
D|------------10p5-----------------------------10p5-----------------------|
A|---------7--------7------------------------7----------7-------------------|
F|-------7------------7--------------------7--------------7-----------------|
C|-----7--------------------------------7------------------------------------|
G|---9--------------------------------9--------------------------------------|
C|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Look at the 7s. When I play it, I use my pinky for the 9th fret 5th string, then my middle finger for the 7th fret 4th string, but do I lift my middle finger again for the 7th fret 3rd string & 7th fret 2nd string? Or do I barre the 7s? which would make the strings ring out & whatnot instead of being individually strung. How would you play it?

help me please
A good song should make you wanna tap your foot and get with your girl. A great song should destroy cop cars and set fire to the suburbs. I'm only interested in writing great songs.

Be sure to be able to recite at least one Shakespeare quote before and after each song.

Out loud, or in your head, it's up to you.

Roll your finger over them.

barre? so I mute them after I play the note?
I have no idea how to do that with my picking hand

No, you roll your fretting finger over them. You would play the first 7 with the tip of your index, and then the next one with part a bit further down on your finger and so on.

D|---------10p5-----------------------10p5-----
A|-------7------7-------------------7------7---
F|-----7----------7---------------7----------7-
C|---7--------------------------7--------------
G|-9--------------------------9----------------
C|---------------------------------------------
   R I I I P  I R R           R I I I P  I R R

R=ring finger
I=index finger
P=pinky

I play it like that. Rolling my index finger across the ascending 7s and my ring finger across the descending 7s.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.
