Hello,
for my History class I have to make an assignment on the following cartoon;

It's called "Look, I have a beard too!" (1960). Clearly Castro and Uncle Sam(?) are figured on the drawing. I'm not experienced with the Cold War that much, except for the European happenings, but this is obviously USA-Cuba related. I was thinking of the cuba missile crisis, but that happened later, so it can't be the subject of this cartoon.

Does anyone have an idea what the subject/meaning of this cartoon could be? It would be a great help for me. Thanks in advance

Well I'm not sure, so I won't vouch for the following. Cuba, I believe were (pseudo) communist (if I get this wrong I'll be incredebly shamed^^) noe the reference to the "I've got a beard to" could be a pun on other major historic communist figuers in history: Lenin, Stalin, Marx, Engels and well Castro. Had beards. The depiction of a typical capitalist is a balding well shaven bloke in a suit. Like I said, just a theory

I was thinking at first Castro is somehow 'backstabbing' Uncle Sam (representing the USA here). If I follow halvies link, it would make sense that this happened because of the shift from a rather capitalist-minded to more a more socialist Cuba

I don't see it as backstabbing, but Castro just clear kicking the US out of Cuba (getting rid of US imperialism in the state).

So it's Castro kicking the US influence out of Cuba, and thus getting rid (for a part, atleast) of the capitalism in Cuba and introducing communism. Uncle Sam (it's him, right?) then says he has a beard too, which refers to earlier communist leaders?

oh, I have no idea on the beard thing, I was just saying that I don't understand where the "backstabbing" thing came from. Did it come from them both having beards?

Nah, the backstabbing was the first though that came to my mind, but it doesn't seem so obvious anymore

To me 'Uncle Sam' looks to be frightened and the line "I have a beard too" to me shows that its about the threat of a communist state so close to the USA and the terror of the 'state' that a communist ideology may spread. Also as mentioned by people before, the kicking might be about getting rid of Americanism and capitalism.
