A video that has completely changed my mind about current American politics.

I have no idea how many of you have seen this, or know about the facts of it, but here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iW5kOB1pmg

While I'm not absolutely convinced, its certainly made me think. I knew the media had a huge hand in things, but a hand THAT big? It scares me a little, and I'm not even American.

The media influences everything. It's the news source most easily accessible to the public.

The media has a huge influnece. Most of the UK's media is owned by Rupert Murdock, so if you live there get used to seeing what he wants you to see. I am not surpirsed by this video.

What this guy doesn't get is that the statistics don't reflect a positive or negative opinion. For all he knows, 90% of the Ron Paul searches could be "Ron Paul is a giant buttfuck" No reason for the media to cover that.

The flaw with this video is that he is confusing popularity with preference. Just because people were searching for Ron Paul, doesn't mean they like him.

For example, during the American election the candidate I researched most was Sarah Palin - not because I like her, but because I was trying to work out how someone so inexperienced moronic could be running for vice president. She might have been my most popular search, but she wasn't my preference in the election.

Heh, well true.
But it does show he's getting exposure, simply because of people taking interest amongst themselves, and not because of what the media shoves at them.

Yupyup, but Palin was all over the media, most likely before those masses of searches took place. See above point.

Yeah, I see your point, but I think the way this guy presents his video basically makes his message out to be "Everyone loved Ron Paul until other people got more media coverage." Which of course is not correct.

Ahh, true true. I'm not sure about Ron Paul myself, but I can see why he's gained so much interest here on the interwebs.

The dude in the vid probably threw a little bias in to grab attention. Heck, its what all the cool kids are doing. What's more interesting is the whole thing the vid says about the media, Ron Paul favoring or not.

He has interest on the internet, because the internet is much more extreme than real life. What I mean is most people on the internet are either atheistic, socialist, drug advocates or right-wing, conspiracy theorist, nutjobs. Ron Paul appeals largrely to both demographics.

Also, if you didn't know the media shapes how the election works, then you've been living under a rock.

But I like my internet.

Well, I do live several thousand miles away from America. Of course we don't get any of what you get with your elections - your presidential campaigns all over the media 24/7. Most of what I've seen of it all has been from right here, the internet, which is significantly less biased unless you're looking in all the wrong places. Even in our own elections, I doubt we have nearly as much of that media-control here as you do. Perhaps. Not actually sure, cause I don't really watch TV anyway >.<

Edit: Eeep, I just noticed this thread has kinda turned into me defending myself against lovely people I mostly agree with. D:
Can we just talk about how much the media suck now plz kay?

No, we want to rip on you more.

Nah, the media sucks, but how else are we to know what's going on in the world?

An oversimplification but it's still fairly important. I think the Obama/Clinton info in the middle was the most interesting.
Is it still a God Complex if I really am God?

America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.

Ron and Paul are two very common first names while Barack Obama is a very unique name (in the western world at least). Specifying the search into 'barack obama presidential campaign, ron paul presidential campaign' Google shows very different results.
