Hello people,

One of my friends' Spider III just broke (thank God!), he doesn't want to get it fixed, but get a new amp.

He plays mainly down-tuned modern metal like BFMV and such.

Anyways, he wants a tube amp, his budget is up to 600€ (if it's worth he could probably stretch it a bit).

He doesn't want to go used and he won't be gigging in the near future.

He is open for any suggestions as far it sounds good and has enough gain.

Thanks.

Make him go used. A used 5150/6505 is pretty much perfect imo.

You can't tune a LP copies down. Some kind of lawsuit Gibson won. Sorry.

Why do you suggest modelling amps and going used if he doesn't want that?

how much can he stretch? is he willing to rely on preamp gain?
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

I suggest going used, because he can get more for his money. And the fact that BFMV use the 6505.

OK, but even if he would go used, there's no used 6505/5150 on ebay and I don't know if there are any other good sites here in Austria.

However, he also considers getting a clean amp to run pedals through it or just a good mid-gain amp which he can boost.

hehe. problem with the budget is that he's kinda in between the cheaper high gainers (valveking, randall rg50tc, the bugeras (which i haven't tried)) and the better ones like engl, koch, brunetti etc. but he'd have to stretch quite a bit to get into that "better" section. And if he wants something he can crank, i don't think any of those would work.

I'll talk to him about the budget but I don't know if he can stretch it too much since the original budget was 500€.

Anyways, what about the clean amp + OD suggestion or mid-gain amp + boost?

If he's not gigging, this can do the job.

Considering his budget, I'd say a bad monkey and an eq would really help too (mxr 10 or 6 band).

Edit: Found this vid... demoing the bad monkey on the ht5

clean amp and od isn't going to do brootz. Mid gain + boost might, but he'd have to try them to see if he's happy with it.

OK, that's what I thought at first.

UG's typical HT-5 suggestion seems to fit again.

I'll hopefully go to a shop with him to try out how that combination sounds and if there's something better to him.

Thanks for the responses.

Just one more thing:

What about other boosts if the shop doesn't have any Bad Monkeys?
Probably a Tube Screamer?

Ibanez ts-9 is a good tube screamer. there about 100$ U.S. dollars I'm not to sure on the conversions.
