ok so chrismas is comming up... and i already have a guitar i got for my birthday... its a bc rich jr v with emgs and a floyd... i love it , and i have a line 6 2x12 120w spider 3

im in a metal band (www.myspace.com/agapetampa) and new and starting to playt shows here and there... but i was wondering if i should get a shecter tempest as a back up guitar, or a marshall mg halfstack...

the other guitarest in the band says we can mic our amps to the pa and use the a recievers to hear ourselves but i'm not sure...

Get a new amp but NOT the MG halfstack.

have you got a set budget? you can do much better than the tempest and the MG halfstack.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard w/ SD Alnico Pro II's
Fender Aerodyne Telecaster & Stratocaster
Marshall JCM 800 4104 combo

tube combo baby. You can mic it.
I've got something in my front pocket for you.
Why don't you reach down in my pocket and see what it is?
Then grab onto it, it's just for you.
Give a little squeeze and say: "How do you do?"

i'd try that. i mean, it sounds like you just got a new guitar. also, tube amps traditionally give you better tone than solid states
Epiphone G-400
Yamaha Pacifica (Mod on hold due to procrastination)
Rocktron Banshee
Marshall 10CD

get a combo your options are much wider good amps to look at would be the peavey valveking, marshall haze, ot if you can go used a marshall dsl401, or a mesa boogie
#9
so theres no point of even looking into halfstacks if i can mic the amp i get?

All in your price range and all will smoke an MG. Anything would smoke an MG!

You wont get a good half stack for the money you want to spent. I doubt you'd even need one anyways unless your playing huge venues.

I was in a similar situation, I opted for the amp route and have never looked back! Ended up with an Engl Fireball.

You already have a decent axe (if it's the one I'm thinking of), so get a nice tube combo. If you get the MG it will sound just as bad as the spider (which I use to own) only really loud.

In fact, the Marshall MG halfstack won't even be any louder than your 120w 212. Remember, adding speakers doesn't increase volume very much.
The MG would also, IMO sound worse than the Spider.

stay the hell away from that MG. terrible amps, hell the spider is better than that one. honestly i'd say if anything upgrade your amp. but for only 650 your not going to do much better for metal than the spider you already have (considering you need a fair bit of volume)
what you should do is take what money you can get, sell your spider and get a GOOD setup. a peavey 5150 or 6505 can be obtained for as low as 700 used in some cases and will be wayyyyyyyyyy better than what you are using now. or be really cool like me and buy a poweramp and a preamp seperately. you can get a carvin ts100 (100 watt tube power amp) for 550 new and a line 6 pod xt for like 299. thats a decent setup for metal

this, any venue big enough to make a moderate-sized tube combo too small will probably have a PA system you can use.

This is a slight thread hijack, but I've found that every time I've tried a Haze in a guitar store I couldn't get a clear, non-muddy as hell distorted tone. Do you need to crank it to hell and back, or what?

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

watch out for the cleans on the Randall... if you wants cleans, that is. I'm not saying all of them are, but one I tried at the local GC was light overdrive at best on cleans, if that matters to you. Maybe I just found a bad one, I dunno

Oh, and you really may not even have to worry about the mic if you get one with say, over 30 watts. They can get pretty loud on their own.
