Ah but there are so many different shades of melancholy, all their own specific melodic accompaniment...

In no particular order, here are some of my favourites, try 'em on, see what fits:

Kate Kelly - The Whitlams

9 Crimes - Damien Rice

Hello - Evanescence (But I figure you already got the Amy Lee angle tapped)

Amanda Palmer - Blake Says/Another Year/Strength Through Music

Dresden Dolls - Me & The Minibar/Boston/The Gardner

Flogging Molly - Far Away Boys

Satie's Gnossiennes

Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts

Guns & Roses - Don't Cry

Harry Nilsson - One (Is The Lonliest Number)/Without You

Little Birdy - Relapse

Marilyn Manson - Suicide is Painless cover/The Nobodies/anything by him really

Massive Attack - Black Melt/Angel/Future Proof/Protection (the last is only if you want to feel better...)

Otep's House of Secrets (especially Shattered Pieces)

PJ Harvey - Plants and Rags

Placebo - Post Blue/Pierrot the Clown

Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely/all of Hail to the Thief/High and Dry (again, for uplifting)

U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own/The Hands That Built America (Gangs of New York version)

And a whole bunch more that I won't waste your time with.

Wow, that really went on for a while... uhh... sorry?

Whatever your flavour of sadness, this list should have you covered.

Cheer yourself up instead.
If you're going to offer a song to cheer someone up, this is unquestionably the one it must be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndwEOIaeuGo&feature=fvst

If you want a dismal song, I suggest listening to Lick My Love Pump, because well, D minor is the saddest of all keys.

Step 1: Buy a Gibson SG
Step 2: Insert Green Ringer, EQ, 3 dead squirrels and a microwave into said SG
Step 3: Plug in and freak the **** out.

Nothing makes me feel like jumping into a swimming pool full of battery acid like listening to most of nebraska, and even some of born to run. Alot of zeppelin 3 is good too. there is quite a bit of introspective work by neil young, bob dylan, and floyd too. if you're into that newer shit tool and APC are pretty hard hittin

Check out Starless by King Crimson (only the first five minutes or so in this case). Very deep and depressing song. The guitar, sax, and mellotron all sound very emotional together, along with Wetton's vocals.

There's a ton more, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head
