i play guitar but im planning on getting a cheap bass for recording or just for slappin da bass

what would be the best bass for my money within the 100-200$ price range?
should to play anything from alt. rock to metal.

and should i get an amp or would it sound fine through a guitar amp?

Read the FAQ, it will answer all your questions. For an actual recommendation, for $200, the Ibanez GSR200 is probably the best new bass you can do. You might manage to find a slightly higher end bass used for $200. Muster up another $100-$150 or so for a practice amp, and look at Peaveys, the Acoustic B20, or the Kustom KBA10.

The FAQ has info on all of this
but look at Peavey, Squire and Ibanez for good starter/cheap basses
as far as cheaper bass amps go, from what I've seen Acoustic has some of the best amps for the money
