I have been to auschwitz before, and trust me. When you are there, any jew joke you think is funny, seriosusly loses all appeal. Its becomes funny again afterwards, but its almost impossible to laugh inside that place. Its really freaky, and really makes you think about what happened. So much more real than sitting in a history class, talking about statistics.

They give you a guided tour of auschwitz, and then they bring you on a 15 minute bus journey over to Birkenau for the last half hour or so.

I'll make all the bad taste jokes I want concerning the Holocaust.

I've visited Sachsenhausen which was a brilliant experience. I've also been to the Jewish Memorial in Berlin, of which I thought wouldn't effect me, but did (I was far from the only one) and I ended up drinking copious amounts of alcohol in the evening after it brought up some suppressed feelings on other matters. On top of this, I would definitely argue that I've got one of the better understandings of Nazi Germany on this forum. I know about the Holocaust.

I understand the Holocaust. Bad taste jokes mean either nothing to me, or it helps me get by things. I will laugh when I hear unfortunate news about friends and will do again.

    Don't be so self righteous.

OP, I will have to back up other UGers though, won't be funny once you're inside, but I hope you thoroughly enjoy it in your own way. I too wish to see Auschwitz some day.

I've been there. It's was a very sobering and thought provoking experience. Also, its kind of scary to think of what humans can do to each other. They had a train that took the Jews straight into the camp. I walked around the gas chambers and the living quarters as well. They have a distinct smell to them that I still can't forget 2 years later. What I remember most though is a room full of kid's shoes. Thousands upon thousands of shoes of kids who were probably worked to death or gassed/shot. That was scary.
