I'd cry, but actually, this isn't even remotely sad.

Yeah, I wasn't really moved either, but all the colored people I know were in tears.

From what I've gathered, she's doing it because she's intending start her own TV-channel.

She already has her own tv channel. She was orginally going to move her show to her own channel but yesterday she announced she is retiring her show.

I was trying to be polite with that . I thought it would be more appropriate than "black". How the hell am I supposed to call them?

black is more appropriate than colored. There's nothing wrong with calling someone black.

Please leave skin colour out of this, people will get upset. Especially black people.

I call my black friends "black".

They'd be insulted if I called them "colored".

Anyways, I'm really apathetic to this whole Oprah-leaving situation. Doesn't effect me at all.

erm? ok? I hate living in a society where the very mention of race gets people very uncomfortable, but ok.
So yeah, I've never seen Oprah's show. Am I the only one here that hasn't?

Wow, that's going to leave a lot of housewives very lost and disoriented.

Personally I think it's stupid to feel offenden when for instance I say "colored". If I don't mean to be racist, why would you interpret it like I am some kind of Nazi?

"Colored" is generally considered an extremely outdated term. It's not as bad as something like "nigger," but it's most definitely not the preferred term either.

I understand why you wouldn't know that, being from the Netherlands and all. Don't get all defensive about it. It's just not a "polite" term. Use "black."

only reason why she's not continuing the show is because of the paycuts.

She's like one of the richest women in the world! God people are so greedy...

Edited as to not offend African Americans <----- see that? That's the correct term

We don't live in caves in the Netherlands, and where I live my term is more polite than black. But let's just end this discussion. This isn't where the thread is about

Jesus Christ, someone is touchy. I never implied that. Maybe I should have said "in American English." Would that have made everything all better, or do you need a binky too?

The direction this thread has taken is absolutely pathetic. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

On the subject of racism: I can't remember the name of a movie I once watched. It was about a black man who joined the US Army only to be shunned due to racism. He had to sleep in his own seperate dorm etc. Then somehow he loses his leg, possibly due to the carelessness of others. He then takes them to court. What is the name of this movie?

To be fair, they are pretty much the only ones left in America that still use the term.
