Real Name: nick

Age: 18

Location: illinois/wisconsin

Favourite Artists: elliott smith, neutral milk hotel, beach house, arcade fire, the beach boys, titus andronicus, cat stevens, archers of loaf, kind of like spitting, okkervil river, the velvet underground, the roots, modest mouse, sparklehorse, etc.

Most Inspirational Writer (Lyrically): i guess elliott smith still has his fingerprints all over everything i try to do. isaac brock too i guess. jim marburger was big to me for a while.

Favourite poet/poem (published writer): i really like langston hughes. i feel like he really influenced the streetwise jazziness of the beat movement which i also love, so i guess i could list ginsberg too, and, of course, who doesn't love bukowski.

If you could be any writer ever, who would you be: john berryman, or mayybe hubert selby jr.

Why Do You Write: to impress young ladies.

Favourite word(s): bloom, plaintive, cathartic

Favourite technique/style to write in: free verse i guess. i don't really have the skill to bang out a shakespearean sonnet or something like that.

Favourite Writer(s) on UG: well, everyone loves less_than_that and with good reason. if your name is mat(t) then i probably like your writing. randy is great and probably should've won this. jimi's poetry makes me think of my stuff if i had any direction or talent for putting things together so i always love his stuff. there's plenty of great writers here though, and they don't need the ego boost because they know they're great, so i'll stop there.

Most Helpful Critic: kyle is mine in an unconventional sense. he rarely does anything but gush at me, but it always meant a lot that someone was reading and caring. very inspirational. dylan always says something worth listening to. and jimi's always been great too. i'm really glad for any responses at all though.

What do you do especially, to find inspiration: psychedelic drugs? i do nothing and that gives me all the inspiration i could ever need.

Your Most Recent Work and Reason Behind It: i think my last piece was that tell me a story thing. i don't know why i wrote it. i guess there's some things that are too perfect, and you want to be like them or at least understand them, and it tears you apart that you can't even though you try. i tried to capture that feeling. i write about that a lot.

Tips for Newer Writers: quit. seriously, forget how to read and write. if you're a good football player, maybe you'll get a movie deal where sandra bullock guides you to literacy and success in a liberally embellished retelling of your life story. if you insist on writing though, spit venom. spare nothing and no one, bare your soul and show us your ugly parts. i want to know about your aches and hates and failures. they're compelling.

What’s your goal in writing: conservatively, we'll say a pulitzer, but i'm straight gunnin' for a mildly intriguing novel or collection of poems that oprah selects for her book club. then i can write the screenplay for the peter berg-directed adaptation, that is a critical failure but commercial success.

Final Comments or Thoughts: nothing more to say except that i love you guys.

"jimi's poetry makes me think of my stuff if i had any direction or talent for putting things together so i always love his stuff."
