lets find out how the people of UG like their volume. when you gig and when you practice how far do you crank it?

il start it off

amp: jcm900 4102 (100w 212)
practice volume: gain 10, volume 1-2, half power switch.
gigging/band practice volume: gain 10, volume 5-6, half power switch. (small animals die)
#3
I crank it as loud as I need to.

Amp: Fender Super Champ XD
Bedroom volume: 1.5 (No volume at 1)
Band Practice: 6-7
Gigging: Haven't gigged with it, but I'd probably crank it or just have it at 6-7
#4
remember that the gain setting is important as well as the volume setting to determine the actual volume of the amp.
#6
I've got a master volume on mine (disguised as a gain control), so I turn up the volume all the way and just control it with the master volume. It's also got a build in attenuator if I really need it, so yeah.

edit: ^^lulz, u got tinnitus yet?

How do you gig with a 15 watt amp?

In my room I use my 15 watt at 1-2, band practice I have my 25 watt at like 7. I have never giged anything bigger than a one room sunday school class .

Cranked to 10, and sometimes around midnight to see what differences there are between preamp only and all tube driving.

Lol around midnight? Do you live near civilization? If I go past 1.5 master 4 vol I wake my roomate up
#11
On my Hot Rod Deluxe, about 3 for bedroom and 5-6 for band practice.

Probably about 5 for recording as well.
Fender Highway 1 Strat
Agile Septor Pro 725

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe
Axe-Fx Ultra

Trust me, I'm a medical student

during my gig days with the solid state, master vol = 6 and overdrive vol 6 with gain 2 set at 7.

with my valve amp, gain = 6 and volume = 5

either way, f@cking hell, don't know how i used to do it.

at home neither of them go above 2 master volume wise

ummm...

on a clock face midnight is the same thing as noon, which would be halfway... still opened up, sure, but not like spinal tap pushed.

depends on the size of the room, i want to be heard not deafend

yeah i noticed that room size influences the actual volume a lot. i noticed that you really have to push you amp if you are playing somewhere like a large hall. on the other hand, home jamming using the same position on the volume knob is suicide.
#16
Full volume on the seven watt setting, I rarely go to the 15watt setting, in my room.
Wait.

hughes and kettner tube 50 (50 watt):
home practise :gain at about 6, pre amp volume at about 4 (only 3 tubes in the preamp (so with one splitter thats 2) so it doesn't really do that good (the preamp that is) and i like my power amp tubes saturation a lot more) and poweramp at about 5, I like it to be this loud.
and practise: same but poweramp vol. at 7-8.
Live I kranck it to 10. (I usealy play large gigs)
#18
When I would gig, I had the gain at about 8, The preamp volume at 12 or half way, and the master volume at 2-3. I never really needed any more
#19
i usually just turn my bassman 50 up halfway.

master at 1.60 on my blue deluxe (1.35 is no volume)
and preamp on 12

my parent still think its too loud....

Practice at home: Volume 2 on a 100 watt solid state (Unfortunately, it's a Spider. Worst purchase ever.)
Practice with band: Volume 3-4
Gig: haven't had a gig since I got it, so can't tell.

Amp: Fender Super 60 Rack Head (Tube)

Home: 3-ish
Practice: Dunno. Probably around 3-ish
Gig: Dunno. Haven't gigged with it yet. Will this Wednesday though.

I practice in my house the same level, or near abouts, as band practice.

Amp: Orange AD30tc Combo (30 watt)

Home: gain at 3-5, volume at 5-9. I usually start off not so loud, but towards the end I usually end up around 5 for gain and 8-9 for volume.
Practice: same as home
Gig: same as home, a bit less if I'm running through a PA.

I gig with a Vox VT50.

Volume settings for a -100 to 300 venue/

(UK80s setting)
Input Volume; 6.5
Gain; 6.5
Master Volume 5
power level on half

If it's any bigger I just turn the power level up to 60 percent and mic it. I never play unmiked though.

Like 4 on the 3 watt setting. My OCD adds alot of volume to it.

He thought stykerwolf was talking about midnight as in 12:00 AM, not 12:00 on the volume dial.

I run my JSX master volume at 8/10 and the ultra channel volume at 4/10 and gain at 5/10. (Unboosted)
My HT-5 through the same 4x12 I keep the gain channel volume lower, at approx. 4/10 with the gain at approx 6/10. (Boosted)

At home my volume is always at 1 pretty much.. it's loud.

At band practices usually 2 or 3, and at gigs 4 or 5.. i rarely have to turn it up any louder than that. i've gigged with the volume on 2 before as well, for playing rhythm 'n' blues/soul type stuff.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

Where the hell do you play with the master a 8?

Anyway... playing myself I generally have my channel volumes around 5-6 and the master at 3.
For practice and live I just turn the master up to maybe 6.
I have a huge fear if rays.

Just look out for that other guy in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Will Farrel. He's a tall mofo, got a long reach.
