I've been living in a dorm where they ban amps, and live with my acoustic guitar is getting pretty dull since I like alot of metal. So, I'm looking for suggestions on how to connect my computer and guitar together so I can record or play our directly through my computer and its speakers.

Has anyone used the following approaches:

1/4 to 1/8inch adapter or cable into the microphone jack (How does one get an acceptable sound out of this? Is there software out there?)
USB interfaces, such as the M-audio one
Firewire interfaces, such as the firebox (this is getting pricey however).

Any other ideas? I'm setting the limit at around 150 USD.

I would spend the money on a good interface and use free VST plugins (which are on par if not better than podfarm).

Decent options:

Free plugins to keep an eye out for: SoloC, 7505, 8505, Voxengo Boogex, Lepou Lecab, Preampus

Question: Are there plugins out there that would be compatible with a mac? That is currently what I've got at school. The presonus looks pretty sweet, my brother uses a firebox and it works very nicely.

Yes there are plugins available compatible with a mac. I don't know if the ones I mentioned are though...the mac has a much more limited selection of free plugins.
