Basically, you're now the governments bitchez, you and your family can have your internet disconnected if someone thinks you might be filesharing (no trials, of course), if you DO get caught (not just suspected, Gov. are nice like that) then a possible fine of £50000, and Mandelson gets to roll around in Big Buisiness money yet again. Thanks Mandy!!!

I'll just leave this here

Similar laws were already passed in the US a few weeks ago.

I don't download illegally, but that's still way too controlling

And would this include, say, the odd song you downloaded years ago?

I'd imagine it'd only effect prolific downloaders, can't see them bothering if you only download one song occasionally.

If you are reported, then teh internet poliez can pretty much rape your ass. So if your neighbour is a cockface and wants to annoy you then you and everyone in your household could get their internet cut off. No trial. No proof needed. Fines for the ISPs that don't agree.

I frankly can't see much of that happening, in the way of disconnections.

The plans have been made by Labour, and won't be considered until after the next general election; when they will be replaced by the Conservatives or possibly even Lib Dems, due to having done such an increasingly shitty job for the past 12 years.

Sounds stupid. I don't illegally download (anymore ...) but that's still way over the top. I signed the petition anyway, not sure how much good that will do though. Still cool to be told you have an email from 10 Downing street though.

Well at least album sales will go up.

Really? Any evidence for that? Is there any real reason to believe that this will work or have any positive affect on artisits? This is 2009. I can make and distribute music for the cost of a laptop (even if it won't be very good). Why do we still need David Geffen to sell our music for us? Why should the government be allowed to side with these outdated buisiness's for their own personal gain?

The purpose of this bill was to increase the availability and quality of broadband internet connections for the country. One dinner in Corfu with Geffen and the unelected, two time chucked-out Mandelson decides that all of a sudden it's a good idea to bend over the majority of people and give them a good rogering? People who download music ilegally still spend more on it than those who don't. This bill is for the personal gain of a select few arsefaces. I urge everyone who can to sign the petition.

I realise I'm getting my panties in a twist over this, but goddamnit it's just stupid.

This is the link to the thing about downloaders spending more on music.

Considering the petition was started by the head of a company whose profits could be harmed by the bill they're against (whatever their lofty declarations about human rights), that petition could be dismissed as biased.

Not to say anything about the impartiality of Boing Boing:
a plan to beat the hell out of the video-game industry with a new, even dumber rating system (why is it acceptable for the government to declare that some forms of artwork have to be mandatorily labelled as to their suitability for kids? And why is it only some media? Why not paintings? Why not novels? Why not modern dance or ballet or opera?).

How exactly would the cut you off from the internet?

that's the ISPs argument.

even if they cut off your connection, someone else in your household could get it in another name.

Or you could log into unsecure wireless networks.

It's completely unworkable.

Not to mention it goes against an EU directive which states that ISPs are not to be held liable for any illegal activity as it is merely a conduit. If this goes ahead, it's basically holding the ISPs responsible and making them take action (with a punishment if they don't)

this. Labour doesn't have time to put any new laws through before the next election, and they sure as hell aren't going to try and put anything like this through. They'll go for things that keep the people as happy as possible, not alienating potential voters with this sort of bullshit - their chances of re-election are low enough as it is, although I sure as hell don't want to see a Tory government next year, that's the way it's looking right now.

Lib Dem FTW.

But they can know what you download/upload?

well in theory yes.

every piece of information you download goes through their connection.

but the amount of work it'd take to analyse it (even just unencrypted stuff), not to mention the issues concerning privacy.
