ok ive read so much. at first i wanted to get active EMGs, but i read that theyre pointless if you have a crappy solidstate amp. so now instead of buying some pickups, ive decided to get a somewhat better amp. im an intermediate player, playing mostly metal, but play clean classic stuff just as much. i currently have $290. budget could be raised to $350. whats best?

^a v22 doesn't have enough gain for metal and the Blackheart only with a good boost

The best you're going to get for under $500 for metal is a good ss amp or a B-52 AT112 which I personally don't much care for the sound of
