I often wonder - on a lot of his more throwaway speeches (like the turkey one http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8379507.stm ) he very clearly appears to be reading. While he's clearly very charismatic, as can be seen towards the end of video, you've got to wonder how much of his "gift" for speeches he owes to his speechwriters.

So what do you think? Can anyone explain what he adds to them, what input he has?

NB: I love Obama, this isn't meant to descend into some sort of "AAAAH-COMMIE-NAZI-TERRORIST" flamewar, since he is none of those things. Well, he is a bit "Aaaaah." But in a different kind of way.

Every politician has a gifted speechwriter. The talent is in the delivery.

Example: Bush's speechwriter is probably just as good as Obama's.

Ted Sorensen (JFK's speechwriter) was the best ever though. He even published them into a book.

It's both. He is very good at his delivery, like clarity and cadence. His speechwriters are probably pretty talented as well. I'll admit he is good at speeches and I really don't care for him. That is what helped him win the election, and of course, ahem, sarah palin.

Every president has had bitchin' speechwriters. The difference is in how the President himself presents it.

EDIT: I didn't realize that some else said the exact same thing I just did. :|

Apart from good delivery, he has a really deep powerful voice. That's important

But would we compare him to the original orators from many centuries ago, the Sophists? I should think not.

Both.
Obama isgood at reading and other people are good at writing.

I saw part of some documentary on his campaign last night and his main speechwriter says that Obama used to write all of his own speeches and that he still edits a lot of the speeches heavily when other people write it.
Don't know if he does that now that he's president.

both. I've seen speeches he did in his youth in politics class, they were bloody good too, and there's no way he had professional speech writers aged 17 or so, but he undoubtedly does now, just like every other head of state.
You're using UG classic, congratulations.
You should be using UG classic.

Dubya's speechwriter was second-rate.
Bush's speeches were better than Obama's, only cuz of his skills and smooth delivery.

know for a fact that he wrote that bitchin' speech that he gave on race during the campaign after the pastor controversy pretty much by himself initially against the advice of his advisers.

Besides, good oration isn't about what's said, it's about how you say it.
