Im not to familiar with the differences between active and passive pickups as the bass Ive learned on is active with the battery disconnected. I think. or its passive and has a battery pack for no real reason.

anyway, can someone give me advice between these two? they're two totally different basses bolt-on/active/ash VS neck-through/passive/mahogany. or recommend others in a similar price range?

Some basses are active AND passive, the bass you're learning on probably has the option of turning off the active EQ, out of the two I'd definetly go for the LTD. Have you actually played these basses? You might find you don't like either.

I haven't had a chance to play them yet. But I will before I buy them. I just live like 100+miles from the closest large music store.

I would go for the Grind, but that's just cuz I found their tone be pretty ****ing sexy.

But on the other hand, the LTD has an active 3-band eq while the Grind only has passive 2-band... that'd be a tough choice.
My Rig:
Yamaha RBX 375 bass
Peavey Millenium BXP bass (won at Summer Slaughter 2010, signed by all the bands)
Eden Nemesis NC410 320w combo amp

I've played both of them, and I like the ESP better. I liked the sound and the fretboard better. The Peavey was a nice bass; particularly for the money. The Peavey had a very thin, fast neck that made playing very easy. For the price, you probably couldn't go wrong with either one.

I've played both as well, and the LTD is the way to go. I love mine and I can't ever get enough of it. I don't think Peavey makes an awesome bass. Awesome amps but I've never liked their basses.

I remember a lot about ESP not making very good instruments. Maybe I read wrong, but I would probably still go with the Peavey.

the ESP looks a lot more bad-ass, but the Peavey will probably have a better tone.
I hate buying instruments from the internet, you really should try them out.
