I just wanted a public opinion on which guitar sounds better between a Fender American Stratocaster Standard and the same model with the humbucker pickup replacing one of the single coiled pickups. From what I understand the pickup is the only difference. The sound I look for varies from alternative to punk to hardcore, and I'm not entirely sure of the sound differences between the two. Thanks in advance for the help.

for higher gain settings, I'd suggest the fat strat; it has a humbucker and they're way less noisy than single coils under gain.

Single coils are brighter, and sharper, in general.
Humbuckers are warmer and smoother, in general. There are almost always pickups that don't sound like the norm.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

The am HSS also has Texas special pickups for the singles; they are a little hotter, but you won't be getting the same sihgle pickup sound of the SSS

The singles have more of a twang to them. It all depends on what you like. I'm into metal (Opeth, Necrophagist, Gorod, The Haunted, and some more Opeth), but idk why I prefer the high gain distorted sound of a single coil rather than a humbucker. I'm the only one I think. But I think single coils for metal sound supreme.
