I joined a gym last week to get bigger, as I am an ectomorph and hence ridiculously skinny. The past year I have been working out using my home gym machine, and while I have got a little bigger, mostly all I have been seeing is greater tonage.

The dude at the gym said protein supplements (like Body Blast) are the go if you wanna pack on muscle really fast. So, I ask my wise, fellow Pit-dwellers; are these supplements good? Do they actually work and are worth the money you pay for them? Thanks brahskizzlies .

Well, yes adding more protein without fat into your diet will help you build muscle mass better.

My football coach and health teacher told me not to waste my time on protein shakes or powders because theyre not regulated by the FDA so alot of the stuff they put in there is bad for you, and most of it is just bull shit. He said "Just eat more lean meats, fish, chicken, hell beef or pork wont kill you"

I wouldnt recommend them, some can actually do more harm than good.

Tip: Salmon is an excellent source of lean protein.

Just thought I'd add that

This includes the dude whos coach is an idiot.
Protein supplements are great for times when whipping out a piece of chicken isn't just gonna happen, such as on the go or right after workout. Plus eating chicken and tuna can get a little old sometimes. I'd suggest to just start off with some simple whey protein and see how u like it. It's not gonna stop you from growing, and it's the same as eating protein from other sources basically.
Edit- and there are lots of good tasting whey proteins with no fat and little carbs.

dont use creatine its bad cus it just adds water to your muscles... but you will get huge untill you stop taking it

Just gotta find a good brand. Do some research and learn what kinds don't put crap in them. Ask a health food specialist.

An old buddy of mine took Creatine, an if he didnt work out every couple of days he would just deflate........ I laughed at him.

This is what I am thinking but...

Alright I'm confused now. Is the shit to do with deformities and growth abnormalities resulting from the use of these supplements just a myth or really legit?

well, my brother is an avid bodybuilder and he takes this stuff called No-Xplode. The only issues he says he had with it is that if he takes it before he works out, then he has to take a dump in mid workout; and occasionally he'd crap his pants after taking it (kind of ironic eh?) But other than that it's fine. So I'd say just make sure you take the recommended amounts and READ THE INGREDIENTS, and make sure you aren't getting stuff your body doesn't need.

Whey protein will not hurt you in any way. However that can't be said about other supplements because each has a downside sometimes.

Eating ENOUGH IN TOTAL is the most important thing.

A good portion of your total calories should come from protein, but getting a caloric surplus is the biggest factor, along with actually training your ass off.

It doesn't help if you have the cleanest diet ever that consists of like 50% protein... if you don't get over maintenance in terms of calories, you are long-term not going to build much mass.

And if you are skinny, what you may think is "eating a lot" may be one meal for someone who knows how to eat. If the weight scale isn't moving, you ain't eating enough, period.

That coach and teacher should get fired for not know jack shit about what they're teaching.

How is protein extracted from dairy products (whey protein) any more dangerous than drinking e.g actual milk?

Well yeah I eat shitloads, and I've been training heaps the past week (obviously I don't expect to be seeing any results in 5 days or anything though lol). I have a ridiculous metabolism though. I'm one of those people who can eat garbage all day every day and not get fat.

I've done a bit of research: supposedly for my body type you need to keep protein really high and eat shitloads. I have the eating heaps bit down, but I only have meat/chicken/fish maybe 4 times a week if that. I drink heaps of milk (its about all I drink) but I'm not sure if I'm getting enough protein, which I think is why I wasn't getting bigger doing the home gym workouts.

It would seem these protein supplement things are indeed the way to go...I might ask the dude at the gym about it tomorrow though.

Well the copious dumpage doesn't sound too appealing lol...but I intend to be taking this stuff post-workout. As for ingredients, is there anything specifically I should be avoiding in these things?

Oh...and I had no idea there was an exercise thread sorry. I'll take a look now.
