okay, i've run out of memory on my computer. I've deleted all programs i dont need, almost all microsoft office files, all pictures and videos, i've run the disc clean up and i've emptied my recycle bin but i've still got hardly any memory left.

Basically the only thing i didnt delete is the 12 GB of music i have so i cant see how i still have no memory. Its deiving me nuts.

Any ideas on whats going wrong?

cheers

Install and use TreeSize .

If you have Vista/Win7, run as an administrator. It will show you what folders hold the most data. Delete useless files from there.

EDIT: It will also show you the size of your hibernation and temp files. That could be sucking up a ton of memory. My hiberfile was at 10GB the other day.

Get Ubuntu.

EDIT: how big is your hard-drive?
It has come to my recent attention that our good friend CoreysMonster is not permanently detained in the Fotb.

I agree. If you just want to listen to music and use the net, get Ubuntu. It's Free. You could play games but it talks a shitload of work.

Run CCleaner. Unhide folders and browse some more and check for irregular ginormous ones.

By memory do you mean hard disc space or RAM? What's your computer telling you?

thanks for the responses.

My hard drive is 37GB

Either get a bigger HD or a smaller OS.

For the latter i would suggest Ubuntu

How much free space do you have? Unfortunately music is the killer when it comes to filling up the hard disc.

Some things you could try are reducing the size of the page file and clearing all temp files and cookies.

The page file is basically a space on the hard drive dedicated to storing addresses for the RAM etc. You can adjust the size of it in the control panel, but I can't remember exactly how to get there, a google search will find it for you though.

EDIT: your HD isn't partitioned is it? there could be a whole lot of space you don't realise is actually there.

I think it would be a pretty good idea, being as your computer sounds like it is pretty low spec, to intall ubuntu which would prolly free up some disk space and run better anyway.

know any nerds?

Are you running windows? Thats probably your problems.

Ok, but seriously I had this problem not too long ago and the best thing to do is to go through "Add and Remove Programs" and delete everything you don't use. Then go through your C drive and delete anything unnecessary. Really, everything old zip files, old porn etc. One thing I ran into is that some when some downloaded .exe files install themselves they don't delete the downloaded portion so a 4gb file ends up taking 8gb of space. That was one of my main problems anyways.
