why does the whole guitar world at the moment seem obsessed with sweep picking and how well you can sweep pick
it was the same with pinch harmonics for a while
it just seems like the fad technique to do at the moment
anyone agree?

Sounds cool, looks cool, relatively simple, looks impressive to noobs.

Meh, I'm not too keen on sweep picking, not my style.

I can't sweep pick.

I can't sweep. Don't want to, either. Doesn't fit acoustic guitar too well IMO.

I support the 2nd Amendment. I don't support people who abuse it.

Because those kinds of guitar players are oblivious to music. All they can comprehend is physical technique.

...modes and scales are still useless.

It's really the newest technique to come around that's popular. The same thing happened with tapping. It'll either go away once someone figures out a faster way or everyone gets bored with it.

I don't really hear many people make a big deal out of it.
Its a nice skill to know if your into metal, its not a necessity though.

so sweep picking is the porsche of the guitar world?

pretty much. and the drivers, for the most part, are obnoxious egotistical fools who think they're all that. There are exceptions though.

I enjoy sweeping. They can sound quite good when incorporated properly into a song, so long as they're not over used. It's also just fun to play. I love the sound of a sweep using the neck pink up with the tone rolled all the way back. I just like it.

Not to sound like a egotistical prick, but I've been practicing it a lot lately, and I can honestly say that I can do 1-string sweeps effortlessly and flawlessly.

Fast-fingered electric guitarists do not make up the entire guitar world.

Everyone here hating on sweep picking probably cant do it themselves. Its a useful skill for metal but it is not necessary to be a good player.
#32
if you wanna sound like your playing fast but are too lazy to alternate pick, sweeping is your best bet, i dunno wtf your listening to but i'm not seeing a "fad" around sweep picking in the first place

shEDIT: for the record i can sweep

this thread is a perfect example of why threads like this shouldn't be created...........
if you wanna sweep pick do it. if not then dont. just like everything else to do with guitar, you can only get it down by practicing.

I fail to see how sweep picking is lazy. Alternate picking has a TOTALLY different sound from sweeping. Sweeping fits in some phrases better than alternate picking does, it has nothing to do with being lazy.

Hahaha i feel like very few UGers can sweep. I can do a poor man's sweep, but i wouldn't call it legitimate at all. It's a pretty sweet technique when done well, but it can get a bit tiring. Protest The Hero does a good job of employing it, in a few songs at least.
