I play in a metal core band like Parkway drive/August burns red type stuff and i have a marshall jcm 800 2203 and i just cant get good tone out of it and i was wondering what pedal would work best for getting the heaviest sound and ibanez tube screamer, maxon overdrive, or seymour duncan twin tube mayhem

if you can't get a good sound out of that amp you suck at guitar. bottom line.

First of all, I enjoy deathcore for it's complexity and it's the only genre heavy enough for me

I want an amp good for playing hippie tunes. I want it to be an actual amp, not a tube amp.

I don't know about you, but I find it very difficult to get a good distorted tone out of a telecaster/

TS, what kind of guitar do you have?
#6
i have a hollow body tele i use for school and sometimes i play it with my tonebone hot british and my ampeg practice amp and it sounds great at low volumes actually.

many hardcore bands use telecasters (although he's not playing hardcore). my telecaster is the hottest guitar i have (hot pickups, though)

Yeah, but if its hollow its probably gonna have a lot of excess feedback. If its a singlecoil it might have a lot of excess noise. We'd really have to know what he doesn't like about his tone before we could fix it though.

Dunlop 535Q Wah, Ibanez TS-9, EHX LBM
Mesa/Boogie Express 5:25
MXR 6-band EQ, Boss NS-2, Boss PS-5, MXR Phase 90, MXR Carbon Copy

GAS: Micro POG

You might want to invest in a more "metal" guitar such as Ibanez or Schecter, or anything with humbuckers in them. The guitar you have I'm assuming has single coils, which are mostly used for clean tones.

+1. Who here bets he's not coming back?

If you want to sound like those bands just put the treble and bass at 10 and mids at around 1 or 0.

But seriously, with a JCM 800 you should be killing it. Join a band that plays better music and they will love you for having that amp.

Semi on-topic but do any of you dudes use noise gate pedals? Some of my friends who play more death metal stuff highly recommend them but I have no idea how necessary it is to have one.

If you play anything high gain and want it to sound crisp, they're basically a necessity. If you're going for a grungy, raw sound, not so much. I used a Boss noise suppressor when I was in a deathcore band all summer and it helped out so much.

I see, well I love doing thick, "wall-of-sound" type stuff but there's also some leads I do that sound too shitty and muddy with my current set-up. I think I'm just better saving up for a decent amp haha

Well you could always buy the pedal and just switch it on when you start your leads. Even with the best set ups, a noise suppressor is going to help out so much.

Yeah, I have the Boss NS-1 and if I play extended periods of time without it (like when the battery runs out and I'm too lazy to change it), everything sounds so much tighter when I finally get around to using it again.
My band, Escher
My progressive rock project, Mosaic

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll probably tack one onto the christmas list since I can't think of shit except books and music. haha

i was thinkin of trading for a 6505+ and i play a schecter hellraiser c-1 FR and a solo-6
#22
I've never played a 6505, but I can vouch for the JSX head. It's what I play through and I love it. Really heavy sound, but it's also more than capable of a really delicate clean or bluesy tone as well.
#23
I find that 6L6 powered amps generally got a more metalcore sound than EL34 powered ones, I dunno if that's just me.
#24
i have a line six, can anyone tell me why my tone is shit? jk

do have a line six though, shit fukken sucks
#25

Everyone who says line 6 has shitty tone is just overexaggurating. Sure the tones on it aren't the best, but after messing with one at GC I was able to get some decent tones out of it.

Yeah. I think the way they conduct their business and the way they market their products is pretty stupid, but I think you can get decent tones out of anything if you work hard enough.
#29
i don't think they're even that bad. there is certainly better in the price range, but they're not unlistenably terrible/.
#30
i think the biggest problem is the clean channel, its just warbly and shit, that and the distortions could be better. what makes me hate it is the clean channel really.

also im playing on a shitty guitar. Samick, strat copy.
