Hey Guys-

I was wondering if you guys had any experience with the EMG 81-85 18 volt mod (when each pickup is powered by a separate battery) It seems like its relatively easy to do, but is it worth it? Is the difference that noticeable?

I found this link, but I was wondering what you guys thought.

Well first off each pickup isn't powered by a separate battery in the 18v mod, the whole circuit is 18v. I have mine like this, I like it but try it for yourself and see how your ears like it. I think they sound much better. Here's an easy diagram to follow....

The difference is quite noticeable. It sounds great on an overdriven tube amp, but if you value your clean tone, I'd suggest not performing the 18v mod. It makes your pickups pretty much useless for a clean sound.

Dear god your a genious, I've always wondered what the diagram looked like. Now, how do you make that switichable from 9 to 18 volt without having to disconnect anything. Like a 2 way switch?

Here's a link to the 18v mod thread. It has multiple ways to do it including one with a switch so you can go back to 9v.
