How much does it cost to have a luthier/tech hollow out a guitar? i'm planning on hollowing out a telecaster, just the part under the pickguard most likely.

The part under the pickguard is already hollowed out... it's where the electronics are isn't it?

if you have a router you can do it yourself for just the cost of a 1/8" wood cap, paint, and lacquer.

This.

Im lost as to why any one would want to. plus the tele is already hollowed out under the pickguard. unles you just want to make the guitar lighter and alter its tone significantly. Using the router is how one would do this but make sure you know what your doing before you kill yourself

I must assume you are only doing this for weight reduction, because hogging out the wood under the pickguard is certainly not going to give you some kind of hollowbody or thinline Tele sound...

When a factory does this, they use a LOT of experience and/or technology to determine what routing shapes will (or won't!) affect the sound (neither of which I have, sorry), or an immense amount of trial-and-error (which I DO have, just not with this, lol).

If lightness is your goal, either go with Inv. Jim's suggestion of a new cap, or hog out the back with a router and cover it, or not. Just stay away from the central core between the pocket and bridge to avoid stability issues.

Please tell me thats not styrofoam...

that white powder on the newspaper doesn't look like it'd be styrofoam, but then again I've never seen styrofoam sawdust before

it certainly can't be wood, and I don't really see what it has to do with the post he quoted

I wish I had a guitar like that...

I'd probably quit playing guitar, and just do a bunch of coke until I die...

Well some guy smuggled a squire hollowed out and filled with cocain into an airport. The saw the guitar leaking white powder and he got busted.

I guess if you played this guitar, the strap would have to be pretty high.

actually this
if you wanted to chamber it, you pobably could do it yourself prety easily. If you wanted things like f-holes you'd need a luthier
