so me and my band (12 Good Omens) are starting to get shows, but we need some covers to play live because we only have about 8 originals in the bank right now. we were going to play Shine by Collective Soul, but every band in our area is playing that. we are a three piece band, drummer/singer, bassist/singer, guitarist. we need something that will be plausible for us to do, something pretty basic that everyone knows, preferably in standard tuning or Drop D. all suggestions are welcome.

we play a variety of stuff. we play what can sound like, the white stripes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Sick Puppies, Foo Fighters, or Steve Miller. i'm the bassist, but i play guitar when i'm not practicing with this band. i can play all of the material we write and a lot of the above bands' material. our guitarist for this band, unfortunately, doesn't have a whole lot of skill in soloing or anything very technical for that matter. he can play chords and power chords and can do anything easy/intermediate that i show him how to do. i hope that answers your question!

Free Bird!

Were you referring to the song or to my last name which means Free Bird?

Maybe cover something by Dire Straits? Sultans of Swing is done too much so do a different song.

the song...i'll take some dire straits into consideration...Sultans of Swing is so cool though, but i don't think our guitarist can play it personally anyways (Sultans of Swing that is).

just talked to our guitarist like an hour ago and he doesn't want to do Dire Straits that much. he knows Money For Nothing, but he doesn't want to do it cuz it's so long. any other suggestions. we've got two months just about to get stuff together for OUR OWN gig at our town's theatre, maybe...but more like probably rather than maybe. we've played some green day stuff, but it's too easy and annoying for us. i want to do technical stuff, but i don't think that the other guys do...SUGGESTIONS PLZ

Dutch roots?

Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters
Roxanne - The Police (falsetto is your friend)
Some Chili Peppers stuff (difficult for bass, easier for others)

Dutch roots? no we're from the US in Michigan.

foo fighters sounds good. Roxanne would be a little hard to do vocally, just cuz Sting has a ridiculously high pitched voice. the chili peppers would be good, too. i'll talk to the guys tomorrow at school about it. more suggestions are welcome...

Here's my list of fail-safe covers:

Early REM is good, Hendrix, The Wall by Pink Floyd, Sweet Home Alabama, Blister in The Sun, even a song like "Bohemian Like You" by the Dandy Warhols rocks out.

Also try and find something a little bit different and adapt it to your band's sound to try and make your set different to every other cover band out there.
#15
i'm gonna say, no to Sweet Home Alabama, cuz it's just over played and i'm speaking for the whole band...specific songs for the rest though, please! i've never heard of "Bohemian Like You" and i doubt that any of the guys know it let alone Dandy Warhols...we are trying to step away from being a cover band, but we are going to have our own gig soon, and we don't have enough originals right now. that is the only reason why i'm asking for covers.

What WILL you guys play?
I'll suggest "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.
It would be a fun one to learn and the tough guitar parts could probably be taken out.
People will know the tune, also.
#24
Wish You Were Here is a good one, but i'll have to talk to the guys about it...same with Tomorrow, i never heard it, but listened to it on YouTube and it was good and sounded easy enough. i watched like 2 seconds of Bohemian Like You and it was TERRIBLE! i don't want to look at ****! that's disgusting!

Oh you're a christian band?

Play some stuff by Live then(if Silverchair doesn't work out). I Alone and Lightning Crashes are the ones every knows.

Sing 'Lesbian seagull' from the Beavis and Butt-head movie, it's religious

we'll look up some Live, we will play secular music, but we want lyrically-clean stuff, because we are going to be under a christian label if we ever get signed.

if your a christian band, how about get in the ring by g n r?
nah just kidding. how about some thin lizzy? whiskey in the jar, jailbreak, cowboy song and boys are back in town are relatively easy and sound great.
#33
whiskey in the jar, maybe, but no to jailbreak cuz there is a band who we are friends with who do a cover of that.

doesn't get in the ring start or have sound-clips of axl rose and some chick having sex or something? i remember reading in a Guitar World about one of their songs having some sound clips of axl having sex.
