Are there any books that have detailed analyses and backgrounds of music and it's evolution from the earliest recorded genres to current genres or anything along similar lines?

sorry if this is the wrong place, it didn't really seem to fit well into other forum sections but i'll move it if need be.

Took a course called the geography of popular music about five years ago. The class and book spanned from early slave songs all the way up to hip hop and grunge and everything in between. Can't remember the book title but a google search of geography of popular music may turn up something interesting.
