I just bought a new (old) Sunn Alpha 112, and today when I finally had time to really crank it up, I noticed a few problems... First of all, is it normal to have to put the gain to around 5 or 6 for there to be decent volume on it? I wanted to try it clean, and with the gain from 1 to about 4 there seems to be almost no volume. Second, as I was turning the volume up, about halfway up there was a loud snapping noise and then the noise like when you touch the end of a cable plugged into an amp. And I had to turn off the amp and then turn the volume down to get it to stop. But at lower volumes it plays fine. Does anybody know what the problem might be? Any help is appreciated for either problem. Thanks in advance

Nick

You could post on UG during breaks, watch youtube videos, read up on some theory, watch porn, or any computer-related activities you enjoy. There are other options as well, such as TV, sexual intercourse, or even just take a snack and water break.

well, it's an old (tube I guess) amp, you should give it to a tech and have it cleaned up, maybe something fried and it needs to be changed. change the tubes out. I bought an old carlsbro amp once from the 70ies, it seemed to work alraight but then everything started to fail on me. Just have it cleaned up from the inside.

I have found this website that describes some of your issues;

From reading thru it myself, it sounds like you have a bad preamp tube or the wrong preamp tube. Good luck and let us know what happened, it's a good resource for us all!

It's a solid state, so no tubes. But a bad preamp could be the case
