I'm curious, with the release of Paranormal Activity and everyone saying it's making them sh*t themselves. I'm wondering why watch a film to be scared? Unless it's exciting? Personally I don't think that, I think it's pointless to watch a film for a rush.

I like to watch films that make me laugh, and make me feel good, but everyone's different... so why do you watch films?

Because I want to be entertained.

EDIT: ^ answers the question Why I watch films..
But in more detail..

Sometimes it's good to get a little scared.
It makes it fun.
But I'm with you.. I would much rather watch funny movies.

It's a boredom killer. I like a good laugh (comdey/Rom-com) , a good drama (I like to be interested and hooked), or an explosion-packed shootout.

Entertainment, and personal interest. I'm a film enthusiast by heart, so I get to enjoy both the entertaining parts and the technical parts.

But for your sort of question regarding scary films: being scared is, to me, very much the same as getting very excited. This, of course, when it's 'fake'. I hardly think being chased down a dark alleyway by men with knives in reality would be exciting.

I really don't watch films that much. Not many of them do anything for me. Meh.

I watch horror films because they're cool and because of the rush, like you said.

How is that pointless, exactly? Seems pretty fun to me... I mean it's no less pointless than going on a rollercoaster or anything like that...

its a pretty silly question. Its like asking why people enjoy going on rollercoasters if it scares them. There are just some humans in the world that enjoy being scared, that's all there is to it.

I was playing iSketch the other day and I met this girl who claimed to be deaf. She told me she made plans to see 2012 with some friends. I asked her what reason she has to go to the movies if she can't hear any of it. She said that she goes just because its fun, and she enjoys the visual stimulation. I suppose that's a reason that applies to all people, disabled or not.

Just the idea of 'fake' scariness to be excited, seems a bit odd to me.

I ticked everything in the list, as for your people enjoying being scared question, I enjoy it. Isn't the rush you get with fear the whole reason we (maybe you guys didnt) do stupid, borderline illegal things as kids? Also the "other" is that I like it when I watch a movie and it makes you feel like you have power as one person ("Law Abiding Citizen" and "V for Vendetta" are two films that do this), though it never lasts and you soon realise that just isnt the world we live in.

I generally like to laugh, but with films like LOTR or the Dark Knight I want to be impressed/amazed. Though in general I like to be impressed, and definately not scared.

It's actually completely different. You eat food to stay alive, we have a choice to watch films or not, and the TS wants to know what our motivation is for watching the films we watch. Perfectly valid question.

And yes, obviously entertainment, but what kind of entertainment. Entertainment is a broad term.

To be entertained! Plain and simple.

Depending on my mood, any one of the options you have up there will do it.

To me, movies are magical. They offer new worlds with new possibilities.

Sometimes I like to watch cheesey movies just to laugh at them but generally what I like to see most are well constructed films. I look for things like great acting, directing, writing and set design, etc.
WARNING:This post contains explicit portrayals of violence; sex; violent sex; sexual violence; clowns and violent scenes of violent excess, which are definitely not suitable for all audiences.

Obvisously people watch (mainstream) films for entertainment, That's all. People take shit too far/seriously these days.

I chose all of them. It all depends on the film.

I take that extremely offensively.

God damn it's people like you that ruin everything.

i like a good comedy, or something with a really engaging story. lots of substance, not just an everyday drama.

Hostel wasn't a scary film. It was just gore porn.

I know of no one.

I don't regret it...
That is because I skip to the halfway mark whenever I watch it, and I watch it when I am in the mood for a mindless movie.

You have to take art in accordance with the aim of the artist. I don't watch a movie expecting anything, my only job is to perceive it. It's up to the mind behind the film to take me where I'm supposed to go. When you feel like you've thoroughly enjoyed the journey as a whole, and not just succumbed to the bright lights and cheap thrills, then you have truly experienced art.

Used to be for laughs, but I'm ****in jaded from basically the same movies being released over and over.

I like Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, anything else that actually has a plot or two or 50 that makes me think.

Same with TV; The Prisoner, If I saw all the other episodes to catch up, Id probably start watching Lost...
Bands I must see in concert
Silvertide
The Black Crowes
Jackyl
Black Stone Cherry
AC/DC
StoneRider
Freedomhawk
The Darkness and/or the sideprojects of the band members
Buckcherry
The Answer

Theres more. But those are the main ones

For me, a film has to be very fast paced for me to keep interest in it which is why I normally watch horror and action films.
Utah's Token Black Guy

People watch horror movies because its "safe" horror.

I watch horror movies to get creeped out, but I generally like creepy shit.
I also like watching movies to laugh, to feel good, and a bittersweet movie (i.e. Amelie) is good every now and then.

But I also like to watch for the "artistic" side of filmmaking. Like cinematography, how the music works with the scene, lighting, the story, etc.
