A few days ago, I was browsing through facebook and suddenly this thing popped up that said "Anti-Virus Pro 2010."
Now I knew that I didn't have a program called that on my computer, so I tried to Ctrl+Alt+Delete (Task Manager) and close out of it.
The task manager came up for about a half a second, then disappeared, and a box came up that said something like "This process can not be terminated."
So immediately I tried shutting off my computer and turning it back on.
When it started up, it got past the Windows XP loading screen, then I got what people are calling"The Blue Screen of Death, or BSOD."
I immediately called the place where I get my computer fixed, they came picked it up, and then today I found out that I had lost everything that was on my computer, and that my computer had to be reformated.
12 gigabytes of music, and a couple thousand dollars worth of programs, all gone.
They told me that they were having 5-10 computers (I live in a small community) come in everyday because of this virus, and that it was comming from Facebook and Myspace.

Now, if you believe this, and you have things that mean alot to you on your computer (like me), and you are a often user of Facebook and/or Myspace, I would recommend staying off of them until you the virus has been cleared from them.

UPDATE: Ok, so I just found out that I misunderstood what my computer repair man was talking about. He was saying that the virus that infected my computer managed to delete/damage all/most of the files that were on my computer, and that the files that were damaged would not be able to be fixed. Now I have known this man for a long time, for he is one of my best friends father, so I do trust what he is saying.

At this point, turn the computer off at the wall socket.

That´s why common sense and natural selection still exists.

Remember: Downloading Porn=Virus
Browsing Facebook=Stupid.

I have UG Black Style and I can barely read my signature.

that "antivirus" is a pretty common virus that could've been dealt with in another way, you shouldn't have done that to your computer. Or at least backed up your data

Anyways, I don't use those sites. I'm not a 14 year old black girl
#14
I fail to understand how you could get a virus from Facebook or Myspace.

It's not like those sites have permission to force files into your computer. You obviously must've clicked or downloaded something you shouldn't have.
#15
thank god for mac. im so paranoid about this kind of crap that im still using an anti-virus program anyways. sorry to hear about losing all your stuff

Yeah, scam antivirus programs like that couldn't have downloaded from Myspace or Facebook, and if you google the name of the program there are usually instructions on how to remove it.

In fact, take a look at this: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=anti-virus+pro+2010&aq=f&aqi=g3&oq=&fp=be5ffa94030d2d34

You could have done a quick Google search and figured out how to get rid of it yourself. It's happened to me before and I fixed it without any outside help AND without losing all my stuff.

Honestly this.

I killed Windows Safeshield, Spyware Defender, and about 3 other spinoff's of these virus's with nothing but google.

Don't bother going back to the place you sent it in to. They obviously don't care about fixing anything, and just took the cheapest, laziest way out with no regards for anything you may have had on it. That's not a difficult virus to fix, and if you google it, you'll find instructions and programs on how to fix it. Always google the symptoms or name of the virus, you WILL find instructions on fixing it. There is almost never any need to reformat, the place you sent it into is probably just stupid, or lazy.
#27
You can almost always recover data from your hard drive even if you get the blue screen of death. You have to remove the hard drive from your computer and use a hard drive pin-to-USB adapter and then, just a normal copy-paste of whatever stuff you need.

Also, use avast! Antivirus software. It's the best around. That way, you don't have to switch to Linux or Mac to satiate your paranoia.

And another thing that people hardly seem to use: common sense. If something seems suspicious on the interwebz, it usually is. And if something doesn't seem suspicious, be extra careful.

lol, i knew that this thread was gonna get flammed. :P

Are you even reading what people are saying? We're trying to tell you that the shop you took your computer to is either very lazy or doesn't know what they're doing. They didn't have to reformat your hard drive, in fact you most likely could have fixed it yourself by simply googling the name of the scam antivirus.

My sister kept getting viruses off of myspace a few months ago, but she's a moron and kept downloading them. Thank Zeus for anti-mal ware programmes.

Without you clicking on something you shouldn't Facebook and Myspace literally can't give off viruses or else they would receive so much shit they would be out of existence.

I just went to the facebook mainpage, never even logged in, and within 15 seconds firefox crashed and a popup told me that "antirus 10" was going to search my computer for viruses. So yeah, something is up with facebook right now.

On another note:
You guys realize that mac has few viruses b/c a hacker would rather make a virus that infects a lot of people( # of people who own pc's) rather than a few people (# of people of who have macs). Honestly, If you have half a brain you can have a computer that can do everything well vs. a computer that can do a few things well but mostly be incompatible with everything else.
