Good Afternoon, Good Evening and G'day to all of you. It's that time of the year again, where we all make a list and everyone whinges that the new Cock and Ball Torture album isnt on there or that the list consist of solely bands who sound like their albums were made after 1995 (Duh, thats because they are???).

So for those of you luddites, like me, who have inexplicably stuck around since the last one of these, it works exactly the same as the last one. You list your Top 5, in order, your #1 gets 5 points and your #5 gets 1 point. Simples. (Is anyone else as annoyed by that advert nowadays as me?)

Couple of extra rules. As much as I love it, Devin Townsend's Ki will not be accepted, as it is not really a Metal album, a mistake I made last year by letting Agalloch's The White in. Addicted is fine though.

Also, Full-Lengths only, no EP's/Demos/Live albums. And albums must correspond to the list of accepted bands which can be found here.

Deadline for votes is the 13th.

Happy Voting.

P.S. Because I somehow managed to forget how many of you have to share braincells with household pets to get by, heres another couple of points.

- If you're a dumbass and made a list without numbers, i'll presume the top one is your number 1 choice and have it descend from there.

- If you're an even bigger dumbass and not only left your list un-numbered, but made a list of more than 5, any additions after your 5th listed album will get jack-shit.

Good day.

...To be honest, I can't think of many great metal albums of '09. If I could put Wrath by Lamb of God and The Infection by Chimaira on there, I would, but I'm sure a lot of metal forumers would be all 'THATS NOT METAL YOU FOOLISH FOOL' and so forth.

1. Hacride - Lazarus
2. Dev - Addicted
3. Anaal Nathrakh - Constellation etc etc.
4. Portal - Swarth
4. Fleshgod Apocalypse - Oracles

Got to say, hasn't been a fantastic year.

Got to say, hasn't been a fantastic year. Any chance I can get both Dev albums on 3.5 points each? Really can't tell them apart.

Sadly not, read the first post again

And it goes down a point for every position, I figured that'd be a pretty simple presumption, hahaha.

EDIT: Changed.

1. "Sol Eye Sea I"- Irepress
2. "What We All Come to Need"- Pelican
3. "Addicted"- The Devin Townsend Project
4. "Geneva"- Russian Circles
5. "Static Tensions"- Kylsea

I was going to have Pelican be #1, but Irepress is, simply, my "Board Up the House" of 2009, in that the album blows me away every single time I hear it. It never fails.

NOTE: These are only albums I've had a good amount of time listening to. I'm sure others could have made it, like "The Malediction Fields", "Cosmogenesis", "Blue Record", etc. But I simply didn't put in enough time listening to them. I love those albums, but they simply never got the proper play time, up to this point.

And, yes, my list is stereotypically me, so deal with it.

I haven't heard much, but I'll just get in my 2 cents anyways. *jumps on bandwagon*

EDIT: It seems I've heard a considerable bit now that I think about it.

1. Kalisia - Cybion
2. Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans
3. Devin Townsend - Addicted
4. Ensiferum - From Afar
5. The Great Collapse - s/t

...

6. Katatonia - Night is the New Day
7. Paradise Lost - Faith Divides Us Death Unites Us
8. Immortal - All Shall Fall
9. Suffocation - Blood Oath
10. Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Other mentions to that which either did not entirely blow or had one or two redeeming moments:

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars
Obscura - Cosmogenesis (not really original, but sometimes had fun parts and cool production)
Woods of Ypres - Woods IV the Green Album (what the **** was this? One good song and it's acoustic)
Behemoth - Evangelion / Nile - Those Whom the Gods Detest (both of these are quite boring for these bands. Shitty rather. For metal's current standards, still subpar and boring. But not bad in all respects. Sometimes they get a nice vibe going for a very short period of time)
Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague (Boring for the Corpse. Otherwise a listenable and in some cases enjoyable metal album)
Augury - Fragmentary Evidence (bored the **** out of me. Not because I expected something out of the ordinary without the operatic vocals. It was just...boring. Syriak/Leillindell's appearances were very awkward too)

What I thought sucked the proverbial nutsack:
Animals as Leaders - s/t (****ing wank. I honestly hate this stuff)
Megadeth - Endgame
Obituary - Darkest Day
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Pestilence - Resurrection Macabre

Shit I'm still listening to:
Shrinebuilder

All I can really think of as of now. Haven't really been too interested in this year's metal releases :/

EDIT:

I recently took a listen to Fleshgod Apocalypse's "oracles" this week, which impressed me more than many of the other metal releases this year.

So, partial list finishing!

It's a sludge metal tribute, basically.

Kylesa, Intronaut, Yakuza, Dredg, and some others like Jarobe, Jesu, etc.

Basically a post metal/sludge/experimental tribute. Greatness.

OK, if it's going to get more than the one vote then i'll have to say no. This list is made to really honour a single band's achievement, and a compilation album doesn't really do that.

I could easily see how people could be turned off by it. It is bloated, wanky, long, draggy, cluttered, prog for the sake of prog, etc.

Many terms could describe its shortcomings. And believe me, I have been turned off by prog for a good year or two now, so on paper Cybion sounds like something I would hate. But it just clicks for me because it doesn't feel like it's simply riffs piled on top of each other or progressive for the sake of progressive. It makes no attempts to hide these shortcomings and rather embraces them, I feel.

Using these flaws to their advantage, Kalisia just steamroll through the best and through the worst of times so that when you have doubts about it flowing, fitting, being quality, whatever, it progresses quite literally (rather than just throwing a riff at you). In such a way, I found that it was great all the way through.

Another great thing is that its individual parts are as good as the sum of its parts. Take any part and its fun to listen to. I also found that many parts were quite experimentative. Not in the strict sense, but relative for metal. It was more like it was proposing this structural or stylistic theory in places and you were forced to consider for a moment whether the parts were a proposition on how metal ought to be. At least that's the feeling I got from Cybion. While other metal bands certainly play their own style and bring original elements into the music, I rarely feel like the music is a proposition.

Or some shit like that.

Indeed. Doesn't help that none of the actual riffs or sections have actually struck me as anything particularly out of the ordinary. Meh. Dislike.
