So this summer my buddy had this old what I think is a squier guitar. I practically got it for free...it had a squier neck and graphtech saddles and had some electronics still in it. It did however have this ugly stained finish on it. I decided this would be a great project guitar to make a frankenstrat. He let me have it for 45 bucks! Ill update this thread along the way, but im mostly done.

Many hours of sanding and hung to be primed.
Primed White
Skip a head and heres it taped up after the first coat of black.
I sprayed it white and pulled the tape off
Unfortunatly I dont have pics of it being taped before the red coat so heres after.
Untaped, mmm orange peel
I buffed it with turtle wax polishing compound and it is shinnneyy and smoooth
Backside
Trying to show the shine here.

What I spent:
guitar 45
paint
-primer two cans 6
-black 3
-white 3
-red 3
-clearcoat two cans 6
-various sandpapers 10-15

I liked it before you did anything to it, whatever that finish was looked good.
But if you like the frankenstrat go for it.

EDIT:
saw this on the bay and thought you might have an interest

disclaimer for the mods: not advertising my own stuff as I'm cleary in another country to the seller, This is just the guy I've ordered a JEM body from

Haha thanks man but i dont tihnk i could see myself paying 60 bucks for that. I could find the reflectors somewhere cheap and look for the quarter. Floyd would be quite sexy but I dont think Ill do that. Maybe a maple neck soon :]

what you could do is get a crap floyd and do it that way :P
If you mount it like EVH it wont matter that it's a crap one
the reason crap floyds go out of tune is because they dont return to the balancing point, if you have a dive only setup the crap floyd makes no difference and will return to tuning

Also, yeah i know you can probably get all that stuff cheaper, it's just more convenient that way :P
#11
iirc eddie didnt route anything to fit it - hence it being dive only.

actually, may have been a fender 2 point trem on there originally though.
thats easy enough though, all you do if fill the 6 holes, drill the bushing holes a hair too small and push the bushings in

Oh gawd...
That guitar looked like it was relic'ed naturally!
wtf!?

Frankenstrats are nice though..

looks pretty cool....I just wish someone would do the black & yellow franky

its the only one I've yet to make. I've got an old squier body laying around that I might make one out of

TS: looks good! On my red/black/white frankie...I had to route out a bit for the floyd. Its dive only like the original, but the action was way too high so I had to route down a bit. Post some pics/and join the group in my sig if you haven't already.

to each his own mate but that thing had a beautiful finish intially but you did a good job on frankenstrating it

Alright, a few updates. Tonight I took some shears to the pickguard and cut it up. Seems alright to me?

Im not screwed by doing this am I? I can still mount pickups in this right?

Might be a stupid question hah.
And a while ago the frets were scalloped by me while bored. (just 17 forward)
and now its all powdery looking. How do I fix this?

Thanks a lot to everyone who helps! :]

nice stuff!

the classic strat (the white one) had a regular fender bridge, and he upgraded to the floyd when he painted it red

i've made the classic one check out pics in my profile

nice build! im doing a frankenstrat right now aswell, but im doing a floyd rose on mine this week!....or maybe after christmas...il post pics!
#19
btw...if i was you, id spray a few coats of clearcoat on that paint and wet set!....first with 500grit, then 1000 grit, then 1500!....you will get a kick ass shine and it will just look alot more profesional!
#20
It does have a kickass shine somewhat, its a bit hard to see on pictures lol. I clearcoated and buffed this thing.
#21
wet sand....then buff...it will do wonders

i did a guitar once, it was an old washburn...i gave it for cans of clear and wet sanded and it was just amazing!

are you gonna do a floyd rose on it?

Probably not, at least for a while.
#26

I was dying to try this out at least so I wired up the single coil. When I get the cash ill be putting in the gfs veh pup.
#27
That looks rad, it looks really distressed while the finish is really nice ?

It's cool and everything but I'd do something to like make the finish look distressed.

Im quite unsure on relicing it...
I might, maybe ill relic it the natural way xD
#29
Are you ready forrrrrrrrr.....Cigarrette Relicing!?
I rolled me a nice fake cardboard joint and crammed it between the tuners. Pretty basic.

Nice!
What guitar does that neck in the last picture belong to?
I have a neck with inlays just like it and I need to identify the body that goes with it..

^ No...

You don't use a finish on rosewood. Sanding it to a very high grit would be fine. Then some lemon oil to shine it up a bit.
#33
Thanks for the scalloping advice! ^^

I know a guy who's used that pickup and loves it Nice choice
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.
Probably picked "for teh lulz"

Yes, I'm very excited but I dont know quite how Im going to do it lol.
Im going to hardmount it into the pup cavity somehow.
Does it matter which side is facing the bridge?
#37
I always thought the GFS VEH was supposed to be a Van Halen-type of thing. The rearranged letters (EVH becomes VEH) and the red box + white stripe thing reminds me of EVH stripes too.

edit: Just read the site description for the first time- seems like they think that too themselves.

Hmmmm, after many headaches,: I have it mounted. It seems to wobble so slightly if I wiggle it. This is normal right? It bothers my inner ocd lol.

Wiring time, then Ill get some soundclips of this beast in the coming days.
