Is this okay to do:

I keep my palm on the bridge for the palm muting, but when the A notes come I lift my hand up and place it back down so the string stops ringing out. Is this the best method? Or is there a way to do it without lifting my hand up?

to be honost, id just use the 5th fret of the E string instead of 0 on the A. it seems easier imo

Just keep it muted. You should still be able to hear the notes, but they shouldn't ring out.

Edit: Sorry I missed that they aren't supposed to be muted. I thought you were having trouble muting. So yeah, what the guy above me said.

This is pretty good advice.

3 problems with that:
1) It's just avoiding the problem
2) There is a difference in tone even though most can't hear or notice it.
3) You still have to lift up.

TS: Just lift up. It's easy and will become second nature.

Alright, one more question. what type of picking is it called if I use down strokes for all the notes on the E? And I upstroke the A. Is this normal?
#9
It's pretty normal. I don't think it has a name.
It's important to note that up-picking the A string will give a different sound than down-picking it. If you want your down-picking to improve, down-pick all those instead of relying on an easier initial method.

Also, when you're fretting the E string, you can use your fretting finger to lightly touch the A string to keep it from ringing out. This can give you a bit more of a staccato sound than just relying on your right hand palm if that's what you're going for.

I don't know if this has been said, but for strings higher than the one you're playing, you should use left hand muting. While you're holding the 8th fret E string, gently rest the middle part of your fretting finger on the A string and it won't ring out.

For more help on muting, Freepower has youtube vidoes on it, linked in his sig

Keep your index finger laying across the G,B and high E strings while hitting the open A and use your picking hand(palm) to deaden the E string, only touch the E string though, you don't wanna mute the A. When not playing the A, raise you index finger(while still covering the higher strings) to deaden the A string
