hey guys, i'm looking for a tube amp:

no more than 15w
reasonably versatile, as in good clean and able to achieve good distortion w/ od pedal
i'd prefer a combo just to have everything in one package for convenience sake

couple i'm looking at right now,

Orange Tiny Terror
Vox Night Train NT15H (can i plug this into any combo?)
Blackheart Handsome Devil
Blackstar HT-5
Fender Blues Junior

so suggestions?

i don't really know my budget since i'm not sure if its practical to get a new amp at this point
let's just say ~$600 USD but lower the better, and i'd go used on ebay

thanks

All good suggestions, I'd recommend looking into the Blackstar Ht-5. Also, regarding the Vox AC4TV, I'd say that it is loud enough for jammin. 4 watts in a pure class A tube amp is a bit confusing if you're used to thinking of small SS amps, 4 watts in this case is a LOT louder than one would think.

Also, if you're looking for a versatile amp, the Blackstar Ht-5 might be really what you're looking for.

I'd also throw a Blues Junior into the mix as well. Great cleans and responds well to pedals.

Great list Rutch. On re-reading this one I'd have to say Solid State means not liquid or gas.

I figured it out.

Fender Super Champ XD. Lots of different effects and voicings. Very versatile. Great cleans and good build in distortions.

Blues Junior......great cleans and they work really well with pedals.
I've played in some pretty large venues with it.......and it's more then loud enough.

SCXD is a nice amp, but around here they go for about $300. With 6 bills in my pocket it wouldn't even be in the running.

another concern that just came to mind since you all have affirmed these are loud enough.

will 15w be too loud for 'bedroom playing'?

the orange and vox have switchable watts which i'm finding appealing

The Vox Night Trains are solid for the price.

Even 5 watts would be helluva loud for the bedroom.

Blackheart Handsome Devil wouldn't be a bad choice either. I loved the Little Giant model i had, but ultimately sought the EL34 tone as it was more ballsy and full, but if you're going with a small tube amp you're not going to get an EL34 powered one usually...except for the Windsor i believe.

But yea, the blackhearts have very nice warm cleans, with some dirt if you pick real hard and aggressive, and sound beautiful with an OD on top.

well the little giant is 5 watts and the handsome devil 15, the HD also has a presence control and drive control, as well as a level, where as the little giant only has 3 band EQ and volume for simplicity. the handsome devil works as a master volume amp in this way. for the most part they sound pretty similar though, seeing as the handsome devil is supposed to just be a higher output version of the little giant, with slightly more versatility. still a simple amp in the end.

if you can spring for the HD, i'd do it for the sake of having master volume alone...sometimes the little giant was kinda loud for 5 watts cranked lol...
