I've used the same 2.5 inch strap for a few years now. I've never really noticed too much shoulder stress unless i've been playing guitar for 5 hours, standing up. which really isn't often.

My guitar teacher uses a mammoth strap, it's a 2.5 inch with a 4 inch pad. I hate how it feels. The most important think about a strap is feel. I would love a gel pad.

I've found straps that are too wide will dig into my neck after a while. I just use the Planet Waves straps now - they feel great.
