I currently have a Behringer GDI-21 DI box/guitar modeling pedal. It has a feature to bypass the modeling section and run directly as a DI box. I no longer need it for my guitar (I have a Digitech RP255), but I was thinking I could use it as a dynamic microphone preamp?

I realize that it would not work with a Condenser microphone due to phantom power requirements, but what about a dynamic mic? Admittedly I do not know much about microphone voltage output characteristics.

I would be hooking it up to my M-audio 2496 Delta soundcard.

OK, I tried it out, it does not work. Get a Mic preamp if you want to use a Microphone.

get an interface if you want to use a microphone - all soundcard mic input recordings sound awful.

all a DI box does is drop a line level signal down to mic level. it doesn't amplify anything...

They are generally used to convert unbalanced signals to balanced signals for the purpose of reducing interferance/noise.

I bought an ART tube mic preamp, it works great, and was only 30 dollars.

The DI box would *work* with my Maudio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, but it would record at incredibly low levels, so I would have to normalize the audio, which made the noise floor incredibly high as well.
